If you follow these, you’ll be fine:

    Don’t hate on minorities
Don’t post AI content outside of communities made for it
Don’t insert yourself into communities where you don’t belong, eg:

    • Don’t comment “As a man, …” in WomensStuff
    • Don’t debate the validity of trans folks on Blahaj
    • Don’t criticize China in any way on lemmy.ml

DO NOT post anything negative about Linux (unless you’re comparing it to BSD, of course)

Sometimes it’s a bit harder not to offend than on reddit, because posts may hit your front page from an instance that was created as a safe space for a group you’re not part of, and they may react harshly to you budding in.

Don’t criticize China in any way on lemmy.ml

Note that actual serious criticism of China is fine. If you want to critise their support of the Khmer Rouge, or their inaction on Palestine, or things like that, no one will mind. It’s just when all you’re doing is mindlessly reciting vacuous anti-China jingoism that you run into trouble.

The only reason I don’t is that I’m too stupid to setup BTRFS snapshots and full disk encryption with LVM on it.

You can criticize China, there’s just good ways and bad ways of doing that. Overwhelmingly, “critique” just means dogmatically repeating red scare-style nonsense seeing China as an enemy, and not genuine critique.

being marginalized and being offended by stupid shit have nothing to do with one another.

plenty of marginalized people have senses of humor and are thick skinned. it’s mostly the privileged over educated types who get offended by everything and on behave of everyone.

More referring to the fact that being personally attacked is more likely to offend most people than bigotry against a third party. Not enough people say pointlessly cruel things about men or white people as classes.

where i live, perceived bigotry against a third party is seen as way more offense than personal attacks. like people will go out of their way to twist your words to make them seem offensive because it gives them a reason to be upset.

Can we aim upwards instead of to a shithole?

too many people say pointlessly cruel things about non-men or non-white

            Thank you~!

I’d add that you should be able to criticize anything you want on Lemmy. Sometimes you are right and the whole world is wrong. Especially if some Chinese Linux distro messed up your laptop. /s

You can post whatever you want on Lemmy without any moderation, just fire up your own instance.
No one will stop you and no one can ban you. But no one is forced to stay federated with you, or allow your content on their servers, either.

      WomensStuff

If you’re not a woman, it’s likely best to block (as in - ignore) that channel, so you don’t participate by a mistake. The rules there forbid non-female participation.

Don’t criticize China in any way on lemmy.ml

I get 50/50 upvote/downvote ratio for that, so no. Some of the users are unhinged though on “USA bad so China is good”.
