It generally works if the government is unpopular enough and there’s a parallel violent resistance movement. But when the civilians aren’t stupid and they remember their neighbors being invaded by the US they understand that a regime change will only make things a lot worse. Plus, they understand that their economic grievances are completely manufactured by western illegal sanctions, and they built a medical industry to compensate for this (because people were dying a lot from lacking basic medicine).

Makes you think: wait, aren’t these all markers of a tyranny? The best kind of leading questions. All of them, but this one stood out to me because it’s such a classic, and also feels like an understatement:

Well, “starting a war and not knowing how to end it” is also classic USA.
