I bought this game at least a decade ago but I still haven’t given it more than half an hour of play, and it clearly deserves a proper go. Is this a game I can just pick up and play or is it one of those where you really need to have a wiki open to vaguely understand what’s going on? I generally don’t like looking stuff up until I’ve completed (or otherwise got most of the way through) a game but if some prior reading is actually required then I want to know in advance.
You can stumble around and explore everything on your own, the game pushes you forward a bit when you get stronger so there’s not a big chance to get stuck and bored.
But imo it’s fun with wiki open too. Just to look up what weapons i can get for my playstyle and stuff like that. Many things will otherwise take hours to stumble on or you will never know something can be crafted. But you definitely don’t need to read up on everything, I’d use it more to point to cool stuff.
An important point if you want to play with friends is to get into it together or at least have similar gameplay preferences. It’s not as fun when you’re learning to craft wooden armor and a friend drops you a lightsaber cos they already made better weapons.
You can generally play through to the final boss without a wiki - there’s a guide NPC that can tell you crafting recipes with items you show him, and generally the NPCs hint at things. There’s a few esoteric moments that might hinder your progression that were established during the early days; however the game is fantastic at driving your curiosity and you’ll keep discovering stuff.
I think the sweet spot for Terraria is right in the middle.
I’d recommend reading the Getting started guide to make sure you’re not missing anything glaring. But after that, you don’t need the wiki open, generally.
I’ve put a lot of hours into this game, but haven’t played in 8+ years so maybe it’s changed a lot. But! There is A LOT to explore and play and I suggest doing that first. But! Unless they’ve added a bunch of explainer gameplay/tips the you’ll need to eventually look up some stuff online.

Good to know, thanks

Thanks, I’ll treat that like an instruction manual
