The ground is so saturated that it looks like if you were to dare step off a sidewalk you’d slip right into a mud pit.
Reading that, my mind goes to a scene from Honey I’ve Shrunk The Kids when the girl is nearly drowned in mud from the lawn sprinkler system 😅
