Wondering what’s the best option to buy and sell the occasional thing here and there that isn’t Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.
Any grassroots medium with decent traction?
Please check out: https://freecycle.org/ and https://trashnothing.com/
Both do not require any FB account or similar, just a free account tied to email.
I recommend checking which is more active in your area, and sticking with that site. Ex. Freecycle is more active in Montreal, TrashNothing more active in Ottawa.
Freecycle.org is a US based/owned non-profit. Trashnothing is unclear on who/where it’s based.
I was hoping Gander or some other social media would develop / integrate.
There is a Fediverse buy and sell site that popped up 6 months ago or so, but I stopped hearing about it quickly after.
Do you mean Flohmarkt?
https://codeberg.org/flohmarkt/flohmarkt
It’s been around a while, but really only works on a more hyperlocal level/with more users per instance.
Craigslist? This isn’t the US. We use Kijiji around these parts.
“Kijiji is owned by Adevinta, a global online classifieds specialist based in Oslo, Norway. Adevinta acquired Kijiji when it purchased the global classifieds business from eBay in 2021. Kijiji operates out of its Canadian headquarters in Toronto, Ontario”
Oh wow I did not know that awsome!
The buy nothing project came out with their own app, but I don’t know what the platform is like. It might also go through American servers
Otherwise Kijiji, Karrot, etc
I believe Flohmarkt is the fediverse Craig’s list. My understanding is they are inactive development, but still very small and limited right now. Might be Canada location/instance, but I don’t know.
Hope you’re able to find something that works for you :)
Even short-term rental stays, you can sometimes be better off finding them on Facebook Marketplace – not the best but still better than paying fees to AirBNB.
But yeah, Kijiji, Karrot, or pawn shops seem to be the only other options.
