Whereas:

The Government of the United States has unilaterally imposed sweeping, punitive 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods following the collapse of recent trade negotiations

Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that Canada rejected the deal because last-minute American demands compromised national sovereignty and threatened to eliminate or turn core Canadian industries—such as automotive, steel, and aluminum—into mere subsidiaries of U.S. companies

While a vast majority of Canadians support standing firm against unfair foreign trade practices, U.S. officials and negotiators continue to claim publicly that Canada walked away for strictly political motives rather than economic ones

Full, democratic transparency is required to counter foreign misinformation, validate the government’s stance, and allow Canadian businesses and citizens to fully understand the threats posed to the national economy.
