More than 470,000 Ontario driver’s licences are allegedly among the 153 million U.S. and Canadian records exposed in the IDScan.net data breach. The company added an online inquiry form for people concerned about the “security incident,” but experts warn there is no instant way to confirm if a licence was compromised.
It’s a good idea in theory but I suspect they’ll claim that they’re never done with submitted IDs. To effectively verify IDs you need to prevent two different people from submitting the same ID. To do that, you need to store all previously submitted (unique) IDs. That use case should be made illegal, of course, but it isn’t yet.
You should sue whatever company exposed your data to them and didn’t have it destroyed as soon as the use was fulfilled.
