Its not even a rewrite that is required, Java Minecraft already runs fine on Linux, C++ programs can as well. The issue is it would Mojang needs a reason to adapt the Bedrock version of Minecraft so that it will run with no issues on Linux. To add a cloud save functionality to the game there, if you want that, advocate for the change. Don’t ask for them to add Minecraft to Steam, be sensible about it.
Huh? What’s so insensible about that? If Minecraft Dungeon 1 and 2 can be release on Steam, i’m not sure what so insensible to ask for a bedrock edition to be release on Steam as well. Certainly not as insensible as to ask them to add a team just to make sure the native linux version run well.
If you really think about it, Minecraft is one of their biggest cash cows (mainly microtransactions after the initial sale, especially in the case of Bedrock), they would prefer to keep all that revenue. Doing as only as little profit cuts caused by selling through other storefronts as possible. Given that Minecraft and Mojang are household names, that everyone knows about this game, and where to get it…Why put it on Steam? There is no benefit for them to do this, or they would’ve a long time ago as part of a corporate strategy. Smaller side games like Minecraft Dungeons like 1 or 2, like that’s not a big deal for them. There isn’t really reoccurring money to be made there for them aside from a one time sale. Feels like a profit by volume of sales situation to me.
Person on the web, it is not as hard for them to make modifications to the existing code which can already run on Linux with modifications, C++ games can easily run on Linux with modifications. It doesn’t take a complete code re-write to do this.
You can literally have several codebases with minor changes made for each platform. They clearly have done this for Java, they know there is a fan base on Linux for this game. There is an incentive for them to make the adjustments if enough people speak up. Like, I dunno why you are so stuck on this pipe dream for Minecraft on Steam as if it is the only way forward. But, you can hold on to it if you wish, dearie.
You know minecraft is their cashcow not because of the sales but because of the mtx right? Like, putting it on steam will open up an even bigger userbase. Literally every other storefront except windows store(i’m assuming) take the cut and they’re happy to sell it on there, the excuse of “keeping their revenue” just doesn’t really fly.
Like, i don’t really care about where they put it as long as there’s a linux version of bedrock, but then from experience native linux version tend to be sidelined often, so putting it on Steam is the quickest shortcut every dev can take to port their game to linux. Not sure why you’re so dead set against this idea but hey it seems like you’re the expert of the subject, maybe that give you the right to be condescending about it.
You need to convince both Microsoft and Mojang of what you want, present your case to them about getting Minecraft on Steam. Particularly when a good case is stated to them on the matter, an audience shows up and makes it clear there is a return on investment. shrugs Replying here doesn’t really matter, unless you go to the Minecraft Forums and present your opinion, see what happens. That would be the most productive thing to do at this stage, as clearly you are convinced enough to stick with this idea.
I’m just a dude on the internet sharing his opinion that isn’t based on pure facts. Based on casual observations (I since edited my initial reply about the cash cow nature as you were right…). I feel they don’t care about Steam enough to put it on there as there have been no moves on their part to indicate any interest in years. I am no means an expert, I don’t feel like I am being particularly condescending either. It just feels more likely to get a reworked version of Bedrock Minecraft that runs on all 3 platforms like Java currently does. It would essentially achieve the same aim and would be more likely to be realized. But, eh, it doesn’t matter what I think unless I do the same. Stating my own case on the Minecraft Forums.
