Hi everyone,
I mostly play on my Steam Deck these days, but I’ve kept my Playstation 5 for sim racing games (which are too demanding for the Deck) and an hypotethical Last Of Us 3 or another great exclusive.
Lately I got Project Motor Racing on PS5 and thought that I could play the updated version of the game while staying on the firmware I have (13.6) in the hope of one day permanently installing Linux on my PS5.
Sadly it appears that to play any other version than 1.0 of the game (which is apparently a disaster), I’d need to upgrade my firmware to the latest one, thus giving up on my hope of transforming the PS5 into a Steam/GOG Machine.
From what I know, it’s not possible to permanently install Linux on a PS5 for now as there is just a soft mod https://github.com/soniciso1/ps5-linux-loader, so I’m leaning on updating.
But since it’s irreversible, I wanted to know what you think and if I should wait a little while because a permanent Linux mod might be coming in the next few weeks.
And I know that buying a powerful PC would be easier than installing Linux on a PS5, but I’m tight on money these days.
Thanks in advance for your advices!
Edit:
In the end, I think I’ll just update the console and use it as a Playstation should be.
Even if one day you can manage to install Linux permanently, it’s probably not going to be as seanless as a Steam Machine.
And hopefuly in a few years, I won’t be as tight on money and I can get a decent Linux gaming PC.
Thanks for your advices!
The best case scenario of updating it is getting to play the latest version of your games. The worst case is to not be able to install a different OS ever.
The best case scenario of not updating is managing to get a Linux running there (whether it will be able to play any games is a completely different story). The worst case is you lose your PlayStation trying to flash the new system.
Honestly I don’t think it’s worth bothering, the worst case scenario of one is much worse than the other, and the best case scenario of it is not that much better (in fact it’s very likely worse, as I don’t expect a PS5 to make a very good steam machine)
My only concern is getting my psn account blocked.
I’m considering the same thing at the moment so if you go for it and jailbreak it, definitely report back (please) I’d like to know how it went for you.
I’d jailbreak it. Ive jailbroken every console that requires paid online. I’m not paying to play online. That’s ridiculous.
Well I ain’t playing online so I ain’t paying Sony anything except their commission on games.
And I only buy physical games so that I’ll be able to resell them once I get a decent Linux gaming PC.
I think you should just keep the PS5 stock until it’s not supported any more. The cat and mouse of having to fight updates to play the newest games isn’t worth it.
Is it really worth it to use Linux on a PS5 instead of just buying a PC?
On the other hand: Does one really want to play PMR?

“Just buying a PC” is a pretty grim proposition given today’s hardware prices, so I don’t blame them at all for wanting to transform available hardware into a makeshift one for free.
Once update comes out to patch out exploit it could increase the value of consoles on older firmware. Like the switch went from being able to jailbreak with just a plastic clip to requiring modchips for future releases.
As I said, buying a PC ain’t an option because my budget is tight.
I should have bought a PC in the early 2020’s instead of the Playstation 5, but I didn’t know I’d slowly migrate to Linux gaming as I was only using Linux for my admin back in the days and a weak PC was more than enough…
And selling the Playstation 5 ain’t an option too, as I’d need to add more money to get a similarly powerful PC.
And yes I want to play PMR after spending hundreds of hours on GT7 and having no other sim racer to play. Even if I was playing another sim racer, the problem would be the same…
I totally get the money issue. But there a people who already consider Linux gaming as a big hassle. I play games on Linux myself and ai cannot deny that it has it issues as soon as you get into some niches (sim racing is one of these considering hardware support). I have serious doubts if Linux on a PS5 is something that could make me happy for gaming purposes. If you find the current solution feasible than yeah, go for it.
Considering PMR: I haven’t tried it myself. But compared to it’s alternatives it just does not sound like a good option. Speaking about alternatives, we are deep into PC territory again. Which might make the decision easier to go for Linux?
I will defend PMR. It was definitely released in a rough(to be nice) state, but the Devs haven’t abandoned it. With all the patches and updates they have done it is in a good state now, and with Aris on the team a lot has been improved in a short time.
Game is still not perfect, but I have been happy to recommend it, as long as you know it still needs improving, and has a small player base. I do think it has one of the best car and track lists for the base game as well, and DLC has been great.
I’ve only played for a few hours, but, while it might not be as complete or beautiful as GT7, it’s the most fun I’ve had in single player mode for quite some time.
The AI isn’t trying to kill me, which was what I thought it’d do.
There a few minor bugs (can’t change the volume for instance) and omissions (you can’t practice on a circuit outside of a race weekend), but the game is great for now and it’ll probably only get better.
And it’s not as if there was a crazy amount of choice on Playstation 5. So, for now, I don’t regret updating my Playstation 5.
Of course, it could change if tomorrow a hack making it a perfect Steam Machine is released😅
But that recommendation sounds more like you recommend it based on the promise that it will improve. Even if it had improved: I really don’t see its value compared to the brutal competition, at least on PC, which is kinda where OP wants to be heading to.
No it is a recommendation with a but. It is good feels great and in its current state I would recommend it. But… the AI is not great, but it is raceable. The rain is not great, but it is fun to drive, despite the look on the windscreen. The car and track list is great, 0 complaints out side of “I want more”. The handling is in a really good place, but it isnt the best in places if you are comparing to LMU or iRacing.
Absolutely a recommendation as long as you go in knowing what you are getting, and it still has places to improve.
I could have definitely worded it better in my last comment. And this is also from someone who mostly plays LMU, PMR wont replace LMU in its current state, but I will happily take a break and jump into PMR and do something fun, like Hypers around Nords, or the GT500 cars from Japan… anywhere basically. Or jump in a historical car.
Thx for explaining it further. I respect your opinion, if that is what you like to mix things up. I will still use AMS2 or RBR as an alternative to LMU which is my main sim of the last couple of weeks. And there is always a chance to look into PMR sometime next year if they keep improving. LMU was far from perfect at its start as well.
No worries. I do like PMR, and I will defend it in its current state. Got some deserved hate(maybe a bit too much as I think they got death threats), but was definitely not a recommend then. I would say keep an eye on it, and if you get to the point you want to try it, check in on its current state, heck I would say pirate it on PC first if need be to demo it.
What’s left of slightly mad went fully mad
From what I understand transforming your PS5 into a Linux machine can get dangerous. Done wrong you are without both. Also when it is working games only work so well. When you play on Steam you’re mostly working with the Windows version and those drivers. Proton from what I understand probably isn’t optimized for AMD PlayStation drivers. Also PC hardware (like steering wheels , controllers) might not play well with the PlayStation motherboard .
It’s more than possible to do. And in some cases the games run even better on Linux vs PlayStation. But depending upon desired games your mileage may vary.
Research the hell out of it and make a decision then
Best of luck …
With all of the recent developments in the PS5 jailbreaking scene, I’d stay on your current firmware. A non-updated firmware may even be more valuable monetarily than a current one on the used market.
What makes me doubt is that it still not possible to transform a PS4 into a Linux PC without exploiting the console at every boot. And this is after years…
So I’m thinking it might never happen for the PS5 and I might just be waisting time waiting instead of just playing on it…

Not an indication of what’s going on with PS5 right now.
The people doing the PS5 jailbreaking are making heavy use of current AI tools that are exponentially accelerating their progress.
This wasn’t a thing during the main pushes to jailbreak PS4, and no one’s going to be focusing those current tools on the PS4 because it is obsolete now. So PS4 and PS5 jailbreaking can’t be compared apples to apples.
Imo as someone who sees console modding as an act of self-defence as well as a fun hobby of tinkering (plus not being a fan of online multiplayer or DLCs), I’d say “hold it” and hope someone makes a payload for running games in older firmwares than the ones they demand.
…Or emulate PS5 on Linux on PS5 😬
Think of both versions of yourself, in the future. How are you going to feel if it comes to it that you can do the things you wanted, (Linux to ps5) and you’ve updated so you can’t. Is that going to sit in your head in a destructive way, is it going to run around your head on repeat just smashing up the place. Or do you think you can help yourself through that disappointment easily? Because if that’s going to haunt you too hard, don’t do it.
It sounds like you want to update to play, it sounds like that’s a very important thing for you right now. But It also sounds like you would like the freedom it will afford you, having full ownership and flexibility of your own devices.
The question is how long do you have to wait and is it worth the wait.
I think they’ll definitely work this out and soon. These big companies have pissed people off to the degree they’re pissing in your face, kinda pissed off. There’s no coming back from that level of anger at their behaviour, and there are some brilliant people who turn that anger into action, it’s going to happen and these people are going to guide us through and be a huge part of how we defeat the big corps. It will happen, but it might take a while (maybe a year or 6 months) and it’s going to be glitchy.
There is no right decision. The right decision is the one you make, and whichever one you do choose will come with difficulties that you have to help yourself work through.
It’s worth waiting, but it’s also worth living your life.
I suppose my only suggestion might be can you find a new hobby till the dam breaks?
In the end, I think I’ll just update the console and use it as a Playstation should be.
