There are other studios, also struggling to stay afloat, who would also be demanding more government supports if this went through I imagine.
I’m not opposed to the idea of govt funding for the games industry, but I also think it should have strings and be more broadly available. Like having Canadian content in the form of showcasing Canadian landscape or general cultural aspirations, history, or even just showing the Canadian flag / Canadian backgrounod characters. Eg. The Long Dark. (I think they may already get some funding for canadian content, now that I think of it).
Make a CIV-like game to show case/educate about all the different First Nations groups, or a Valheim-like one that has FN mythology at its roots. Maybe a “Universal Health Care” game in the style of Railroad/Theme park tycoon, where you’re trying to build out health services while balancing various mechanics such as union contracts, public funding, covid crisis/trucker blockades, US lobbyist aggressors, etc.
As for Bioware employees buying the studio… I know game developers who have been earning six figures+ for decades since leaving University. One, when told the average family income in Canada, was in utter disbelief that the average could be like half of what he’d made as his entry level salary in the industry. These likely aren’t the sorts of people that ‘need’ urgent government support.
