Of course they did. Uniparty and their shitty supporters are ecociding monsters.
TLDR: The government announced in 2021 that it would ban thermal coal exports by 2030. Last year, as part of cost cutting measures, the process was stopped. Most of “Canada’s” thermal coal exports actually come from the U.S. as their way of getting around their regulations.
Yes, this is a highly biased article and weird in its message.
The article also says:
… in 2022, emissions from burning coal in power plants were responsible for more than 600,000 premature deaths worldwide. For emissions to drop in line with the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement would require global coal use to drop to 80 per cent below 2010 levels by 2030, according to a study from Climate Analytics.
In this context, you may think that Canada’s ‘broken promise’ is a major burden to achieve the necessary climate goals. The article doesn’t mention any number, though.
In 2024, Canada produced 14 millions tons thermal coal. This is 0.2% of global production.
Top world producer is China with 3,884 million tons, 50.5% of global production, followed by India, Indonesia, and the United States.
Canada’s exports of thermal coal was 7 million tons in 2024, 0.6% of global exports. [Source.]
So please don’t get me wrong I don’t mean to downplay this. I preferred to live without coal and any fossil fuels in Canada and elswhere. But covering such a story - and, more importantly, writing such a headline - without the exact data is a bit weird in my opinion. This is a clickbaity title to serve a certain propaganda.
Totally agree.
Your country gets fascism, and your country. Everyone’s country gets fascism!
