I’m not sure if one would want “healthcare” or “education” to be allocated within a spy agency’s budget.

Why am I seeing news (or social media posts) trying to slant against Carney recently? Considering the next door neighbour, I think it’s been going better than expected so far

People are not content with neoliberal policies with a thick coat of pinkwashing.

Of course the majority is happy that we didn’t elect our own culture warriors and christian nationalists. It’s better than the shitshow down south. But that’s only if you’re already rich and stable.

If you’re poor or don’t have support and backing of a stable family, you’re royally fkd. Cost of living is insane and the Carney liberals are selling off assets for cheap and privatizing everything they can. While stripping workers’ rights and investing more into surveillance.

Our corporate-liberals are paving the way for our right-wing populist clowns.

Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal airports are great examples in their crosshairs.

But they won’t sell the land, so opposition can’t technically call it privatization. They just lease it for decades and decades where private corporation decides everything and collects all the revenues.

The original title is “Ottawa makes $6B investment in Canada’s spy agency over next decade” and the entire article is about the spy agency and nothing else.

No money for healthcare or education

The government has budgeted $57.4 billion this year for health care.

What? Someone trying to slander Carney’s government and lying to do so? On Lemmy? Colour me shocked!

Even if you accept the premise that they’re throwing a lot of money at CSIS, they’re the ones who counter foreign influence campaigns like Alberta Independence. Funding CSIS is directly responding to American interference threats. Which is inarguably good.

In Canada most understand what no money for healthcare means. Our system is underfunded and in pretty dire state in most places. It’s a well known crisis that’s universally experienced. No money for healthcare is understood as no money for improving the status quo.

      No new money.

Canada would rather spend $400B on health care, $14B on mostly US drug costs, and still spend the bottom of G8 on biomedical research, which was decimated in the USA.

This is from the guy critical of Canada for lack of productivity, but keeps Canada at half the world’s average spending on research as %GDP. With a hint of vision, we could fill a big gap coming into the US pharma industry. Liberals continue their anti-science budget run.

Education and research isn’t the same as we know.

Canada spends 1.8% of its GDP for research, below the global average of 2.6% (and the high-income country average of 2.9%).

I agree that is too low, but the new budget includes several measures regarding research:

        • The so-called “Productivity Mega Deduction" (a weird name imho, but that’s how they call it) which allows businesses to immediately deduct the full cost of new investments, lowering their tax burden
        • The “Canada Growth Incentive" consisting of a new tax exemption for “Canadian builders” on up to $15 million in capital gains earned from investments in eligible Canadian companies and changing the small business rollover to allow increased deferral of taxes on capital gains when proceeds are reinvested in another Canadian small business
        • A $930-million expansion of the Scientific Research and Experimental Development tax incentive program to help businesses bring new technologies to market and a $1 billion investment in the Strategic Response Fund for large-scale research and development projects

The government has also previously announced to establish what the government called a “sovereign wealth fund" that will invest in Canadian companies and projects, but unlike typical government “investments,” it will be focused on achieving long-term returns, acting alongside private-sector investors

So I have not yet a clear opinion what all this entails, but there are many good steps.

However, what I wanted to say with my comment is that the headline provided by OP is simply wrong to say the least …

You could probably get money for healthcare or education by funding the CRA sufficiently to crackdown on the tax negligent uber-wealthy.
