I 100% get what you are saying. But I’m also 100% fine with voting with my wallet by not supporting game developers that demand kernel-level access to my machine.
Think about the EA stuff. You install one of their games, and now Saudi Arabia and Jared Kushner* have kernel-level access to your machine. Why, why the hell is that worth it for just a game?

This is what I did. Made the installer mostly a bunch of hitting ‘next’.
Plus, I don’t trust Windows to not fuck up my Linux drive, so when I used to dual boot, I would only have one or the other in the computer. Though, haven’t booted into the Windows drive for months now.

The best situation for consumers is for games to come out on as many platforms as possible. Exclusives are cancer. It’s awesome to see less and less of them every generation.

Yeah, that is my standard way of doing things. Old desktop becomes the server, and it’s specs blow everything I want it to do out of the water, so things like file storage (and the CPU required to encrypt-on-disk), etc have no chance of ever presenting an issue. Though, I do have a pair of Pis with POE hats on them (as well as a POE switch), because I really like POE.
Then I set it up for auto-updates and proceed to ignore it. Love very simple home networking setups that still accomplish every goal.
The dedicated NAS appliances really annoy me. Every time I have had to use one I just think ‘I can just do this in Linux on any random desktop lying around, why am I learning another proprietary thing?’

In fact, I’m now annoyed to find out heavy attacks are a thing in the game. I haven’t gotten to that part yet and finding new things yourself is half the point of a metroidvania.

Some ISPs will also let you switch to your own modem if you call them and set it up with them. Have done that for years with my ISP as they otherwise charge a rental fee for their modem that pays for a completely brand new modem after only 6 months.
We have that already, it’s called Linux Mint.
