  • Had the same wtf thinking how this is going down globally. Like America’s situation currently, totally get it. But, everyday it seems another government is pushing this regardless of the political spectrum that supposedly exists.

Really curious why I’m not seeing more articles about the individuals in legislation that are pushing this and what funding/lobbying they’re receiving. There has to be multiple common threads because politicians aren’t commonly “in the know” of current tech unless someones whispering a direction in their ear.

  • What no one is mentioning is that it highly depends on what type of system your pipes lead to. If you’re on a sewer system with newer pipes you’re ok with letting it fly dirty mostly. If you’re at an older house with cast-iron pipes and a septic system it’s best to wipe them off. I just use a spatula when I’m done eating and wipe it off into the trash. My systems a little different with a monster of a grease trap that I don’t want to have to get pumped again anytime soon so probably more picky about it than others.

Same kinda thing goes for garbage disposals, don’t put food down it if you’re on septic. Then again it all depends on amount of usage and if you mind paying to pump it sooner.

  • If you have space outside, plant native trees/vines/bushes that will help shade the building from the sun if you’re getting direct sunlight. You can just do clippings from wild growing plants for free.

timing of the windows opening and closing is key. Also tracking temperature helps, just a crappy thermometer (one indoors and one outside not in sunlight) will let you know when it’s time to open or close up.

Concrete/bricks work both ways as a thermal mass, if you can get them cool and covered from the sun it will help cool your area (think of cold concrete floors, I have an inner brick wall that an extension was built out on and it stays coolish). Same with water, most have experienced a cold water pool/pond on a hot day, big blocks of frozen ice can do the trick if you stick to freezing at night.

    Free stuff:

    • No/less electronics during the day (tvs/chargers/computer), it all adds to the heat
    • no cooking during day, cold cuts/food only till night
    • Take a nap during the hottest part if possible, or just sleep in daytime and move about at night on off days (something about waking up after a nap makes it seem less overbearing)
    • do maintenance on your fans, take them apart and clean/grease anything that needs it (will need to clean more often if you lubricate due to dust build up causing gunk)

Black-out curtains are great to stop light, but if it’s entering the window already it’s just heating up that one spot so you’re still technically getting the thermal radiation. For that fix you would want reflective window covers, even foil would technically help slapped to the window (it’s the only time those reflective insulation boards actually do anything with infrared). Foil with something behind it to insulate, like literally anything (cardboard wrapped in plastic to air seal can even do it), then you can take down your contraption at night to let air through to cool.

Insulating and air sealing. Alternatively, air flow in any spots building more heat than the outside temp (like an attic or upstairs area). If it’s a family owned place it’s easier, renting you might have to address concerns with landlord.

Currently temps in my area are getting about 95f(35c) daytime and 65f(18c) to 60f(15c) at night. I can usually get my house down to 68ish(20c) before the sun comes up. Windows in a bottom floor with fans pointing in, any windows upstairs with fans blowing out (hot air rises, it’s the same technique for american colonial/victorian houses with dormers emulating ancient style architecture for passive cooling). If it’s single story just be aware of wind direction if you’re using the fan method and point some in where the wind is blowing and pointing out at the opposite side. My house will at max hit about 80f(26c) but by then it’s time to open the windows because the sun has set.

At some point, once true-true summer hits, the nights will be about 80f(26c) and over 100f(38cish) during the day. At that point regulating your body and getting used to the temps is key and an A/C or sometype of ground thermal air flow is the only way you’re going to make anything cool. If you’re using A/C just seal the crap out of your windows with plastic and/or insulation (remember condensation like an ice cup though will cause moisture and mold/mildew growth on the exterior if not done properly). Pick a room that keeps the coldest and put whatever you can on the walls and windows (even a quilt on the walls will help insulate some). Seal up as much as possible and hide from the heat.

  • Oh shit that edit is hilarious and you don’t even see the irony in it.

    The Invention of “Jaywalking”

This is the story of how, in the 1920s, the auto industry chased people off the streets of America — by waging a brilliant psychological campaign. So the death toll was astounding. In cities of more than 25,000 people, cars were a leading cause of death by 1925. In the 1920s alone, car drivers killed over 200,000 Americans.

over 100 years later and some communities are still fighting for policies that allow an environment that fosters connection and value of life over powerful industry lobbyists trying to take over with their products (sound familiar?). But for sure, it will just fix itself if we just give it a little more time 😘

  • Oh man! You’ve just giving me something that I think will really help stoke the fire in my relationship!

I’ve never really been into sexual roleplay and it’s one of the things my partner previously expressed an interest in. We regularly game together either doing co-op or single player since we feel it’s more engaging sometimes than zoning out on a movie., so the recommendations like “Leap of Love” sounds like the perfect gaming/drinking night that might kinda dip into the roleplaying aspect!

I really wish I claimed it when I saw it, just a few clicks and I’m kicking myself for it now. Are there any others you or anyone else would recommend that are more fantasy roleplay focused and might be good for two people?

  • you would have to factor in the amount of traffic that exposure from youtube gets them for those other monetary functions to get a real sense of how valuable it is to be or not be on that platform. Definitely feel like ethics should always come into play though and a lot of creators are branching out with hosting themselves or patreon/etc.

  • Ty for the Mnemonic, definitely something I was looking for and even responded to someone else with the musical treble clef one. The thunder one will definitely help and something that can be passed onto kids (everyone basically knows the miles one). I’m gonna have to start compiling a list because all of you are awesome and there’s a lot of information on here.

Just wish signs in the states were posted with KPH as well but that’s extremely rare, I still associate maps with mileage and arrivals based on MPH so will be harder to transition that then anything else I imagine (120 miles away so about 2 hours on a hwy going 60 mph which is average for states).

  • Not arrogant, I get the hierarchy statements being mundane especially for someone who’s inundated within the systems themselves. The honest answer to this is sometimes everyone doesn’t learn at the same pace or get upset when they’re confronted with something different. For instance, if I were working with someone that didn’t complete school or had a learning disability, I could see them eventually grasping milli and centi (I still hesitate with if I’m using them properly with MM/mm/mM) but then hekto-deka is another tall order for someone who just wants to get off work and have a beer without the hassle lol. A school yard saying that uses order listing as an acronym for a Mnemoic like EGBDF in music (Every Good Boy Does Fine) would be cool.

Mostly though, it’s more about like the “foot” measurement thing. Something like wrapping my head around the average body weight, cool factoids like comparing volumes of water or like someone commented that 100 is the boiling point, etc.

edit: @donuts@lemmy.world just responded with the mnemonic I was looking for lol.

  • lol I remember that about the debate fact checking and all the crap they kept throwing up on how a real debate is practically impossible (even though many smaller broadcasters and organizations don’t seem to have any problem with it). They say debates are useless and I’m starting to agree with the general consensus. Now, they should be important. But they way they’re covered in mainstream as more about “feelings”, the lies and propaganda that are allowed to be spread at them, and the fact no politician is actually held accountable for campaign promises makes them moot as they exist today.

I would recommend Majority Report and Humanist Report (Canadian based) off the top off my head (they have links to all their uploads on all the platforms for whatever you use). There are a lot of more independent news organizations that are decent if you start looking for them.

  • I agree with you and @Nemean_lion@lemmy.ca about the importance of keeping updated. Just remember you don’t have to be the one watching it. There are really great pundits out there who are already doing the hard work of swallowing the crap and serving it up in a decent format. The good ones usually include the hypocrisy, rebuttals, reality of the situation, all sorts of knowledge to share with friends and loved ones (even better if you find a good segment to start them on new news media). (I can provide some creators, but there’s a lot out there you can probably find)

I honestly don’t know how effective any of this is though with the constant swallowing of propaganda. You can dispute one claim with facts, but then they watch an afternoon and get 5 more. I think steering them clear of the bullshit is the most important thing but it’s not just news sources but algorithms on every platform that keeps them locked into that mindset. Laws need to be passed for news/media organizations to make them responsible for the things they report if we want to actually try and reach citizens instead of corpomedia.

    edit: grammar
