Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How effective are passive cooling techniques? Which are the cost-effective and easy to use ones in your experience/awareness?English
28·2 days agoYes, very effective. I worked in commercial construction for a few years.
We didn’t use paint, but the gist is the same. A black EPDM roof may reflect about 5% of incident irradiance and a white TPO roof reflects about 80% which means that a white TPO roof reflects 16x more light than a black EPDM roof and the black roof absorbs 4.75x more than the white.
This means white is easier to cool in the summer and black is may be easier to heat in the winter, but the amount of sun in the winter is less so its not like 1:1.
I’ve been using this for years, love it

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why is this generation so obsessed with following the rules?English
3·5 days agoPost programming questions online and you’ll inevitably get someone saying, “don’t reinvent the wheel.” Why is it so bad to step outside the box?
Am I reinventing the wheel when I use ext4 as a key value store instead of Redis? Or a sorted fixed-width binary file to lookup a relation instead of Sqlite?
I think for answering programming questions, the default answers are like a one-size fits all t-shirt. Yeah, they will always cover you up… but usually not “optimal.” Why is that? I think its because these are common solutions that everyone understands even though there are many ways to skin a cat.
It definitely leads to cargo culting.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What can I add or do to make ramen noodles tasty on a budget?English
91·5 days agoAdd stuff and flavor. When it comes to ramen, more is more.
I usually use some combination of these:
Stuff:
- Softboiled egg
- Onion, Carrot, Veg
- Pork/Chicken/White meat
- Sardines/Fish
Flavor:
- Lemon joose
- Honey
- Worchestershire
- Fish sauce
Really anything that’s fresh from the grocery store can be cooked and added.
It’s also examining one’s own personal consumption patterns. The more one engages with it, the more exposure he or she has.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How do you reply to people saying "i have nothing to hide?"English
2·6 days agoIt makes me mad how people refuse to even consider alternatives and open their mind a bit. What do you think?
I’ve experienced this. For me, it was important to be able to communicate w people AND to not give all my data to Facebook apple or google. Since I can’t make ppl care about privacy, the best I could do was stick w SMS/MMS.
Obv, messages I send to ppl who use and android or apple device still get sent up to the mother ship by the receiving device… but I can’t control that.
There are a lot of great apps out there and Signal is one of em. I think if Signal still sent SMS/MMS to ppl without it… I’d reinstall. But without that, I’d be using it all alone.
Im getting rambly… what do I think? I think it would be healthy to move on
I try to maintain a habit of starting. Finishing a task is obv a noble goal and building the habiting of starting helps me get there.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is it possible to have a public forum without moderators?English
20·8 days agoSpam is as old as the internet. I think a public service with zero moderation is going to have spam without moderation.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Would you use a privacy-first mobile app that watches your whole self-hosted stack — nothing phoning home?English
4·11 days agoProbably wouldnt use. I don’t monitor dashboards. I send myself an email when something needs attention. Then, if I find myself needing to check on something, I use ConnectBot.
