Canada@lemmy.ca•Opinion: The U.S. isn’t happy about Canada’s quest for digital sovereignty
31·2 months agoOur small business just bought a server and installed NextCloud on it. We’re doing our part.
There’s a killswitch scenario where a malicious US executive order shut off our civilization by banning Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon from serving Canada. Almost every business would be immediately hamstrung and the economy would collapse in a week. This is too fucking dangerous.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Why is the Canadian Dollar crap for international travel?
23·2 months agoExchange rates vary. Cost of living varies. Purchasing power parity varies. Travel one year, and it’s cheap, and the next it’s expensive. Pick destinations accordingly.
(I recommend Chile).

11·5 months agoWhat’s interesting to me is that Canadian MSM is now saying this out loud.
Fight, flight, or freeze. How would you respond? How will you prepare for one of those three?
You disappoint me using a US pop culture reference. (Am I doing this right?)

Canada@lemmy.ca•She thought finding a stolen Amelia Earhart statue would come with a hefty reward. It only damaged her reputation | CP24
4·6 months agoSimplest solution is often the most correct. However, according to the article, he was actually in jail at the time. So it’s possible they are the fence, but I suspect someone else actually stole it. Interesting nevertheless.
When I worked in the Arctic (mineral exploration), someone from the small community we were staging in broke into our helicopter and stole the emergency kit one night. Without it we were grounded. We put out a “reward for return, no questions asked” and got it back a few hours later by someone who “found it on the side of the road”. We didn’t pursue legal action, because doing so would mean the next time something like this happened in the community, we couldn’t offer a reward and expect it to work. Conversely, we probably encouraged them to do it again. Game theory is weird.

Penner is a common Mennonite surname, and there are are a lot of Penners in Canada. Mennonite low German (Plautdietsch) is more weirder.
The wiki page has some good sample texts comparing it between Dutch and Low German.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plautdietsch
My surname (Unrau) is also Mennonite, but could be German.
This concludes my TED talk.

6·6 months agoI mean, our courts publish proceedings. Wouldn’t be hard to assemble a database from that info.
The accuracy of such a database (particularly when interpreted by an AI) would be hugely suspect. Also, hard to argue with a database when you’re at the border being detained – the guy detaining you didn’t create the database.
Whole thing reeks.

Chilean wine is great. I recommend the Emiliana Coyam. Mmm

Ask yourself which things you’re buying from a certain southern country with a regime that is hostile to Canada. And whether you can grow that at home. I’ve identified cabbage and carrots as a good fit for my zone (3b) which don’t have a Canadian supplier in my local stores. Looks like I’m having a lot of coleslaw this summer and freezing borscht for the fall.
