I would prefer bike lanes be next to sidewalk, not part of the roads, and I say this as someone who cycles through Brampton. Fuck cycling on the road, I’ll take a sidewalk every time. I know it’s against the law, but as anyone can tell by Ford’s actions, lawmakers aren’t always in the right.

Having a segregated portion of the sidewalk for human-powered wheel transport makes so much sense though. I drive and walk most places, but looking at the amount of morons who park in bike lanes or struggle to stay in their lane on the road… Having the bikes, scooters, etc. Move to a separated part of the sidewalk makes so much sense.

I have to admit, the way the bike lanes were planned in some spots in Toronto were not well thought out. for example, the bike lane on Huntingwood drive in Scarborough is imo underutilized, i never see anyone use it other than maybe the very odd biker, and the ones that use it the most if i do see anyone on it, is e-bikes/e-scooters. I think bike lanes make sense if they are installed in areas that are utilized correctly. im assuming the downtown ones are used quite frequently, but I don’t go downtown much to see that.

Never gonna happen. There’s already new Ford models in the pipeline. Bourgeois democracy gotta recreate itself! 🤭

First Doug and Chow demand a RTO initiative at the plea of downtown Toronto business owners and commercial landlords so that people will, essentially, be forced to buy and eat downtown. It’s not working as people simply refuse to pay. So their next brilliant idea is to get rid of bike lanes completely so that people driving will shop and eat downtown? that’s not going to work either. people are STILL going to refuse to pay. This won’t work and if anything is going to hurt businesses even more because people will simply continue to not shop downtown out of protest like they’re already doing.

Why should I buy a $20 mediocre burger at some restaurant on king street when I can make my own lunch or a burger at home? why hop in my car and pay gas to go buy something when I can now just get it delivered on uber?

It’s the same shit with their new proposals for renting. They refuse to acknowledge the ACTUAL issues and rather skirt around it with horrible infected bandaid solutions. We’re all broke. We all can’t afford the cost of living. Want us to live and work and shop downtown again? cool lower rents, lower the cost of everything, and the people will return and shop. Or, heaven forbid, wages increase across the board and STOP stagnating. You can’t force people to buy more when they dont’ have the money to buy more at an increased cost.

i don’t think everyone is broke, I think people refuse to adjust their spending habits in a time of inflated cost. LCBO is busy as ever, if you wanna see a busy restaurant, go to McDonalds, and what they charge for a meal for a family of 4 is bonkers so it ain’t cheap either. Why are “premium” clothing brands still busy stores? TEMU has customers coming out of the wazoo from people buying what i like to call “useless junk”. I am one who struggles with very low income, and had to adjust my spending habits to bare minimum. I think that’s a mega pill a lot of people don’t want to swallow, based on how it’s been for some time before this recent issue with pricing.

Ending evergreen leases and rent control is going to be an unmitigated disaster that’s going to result in thousands of people becoming homeless.

I have never in my life seen such a fucking brain dead, stupid, self serving political move that is so blatantly against the interests of common people in Canada.

      Fucking appalling.

it’s so idiotic. They firmly believe that places are sitting vacant because Landlords “fear” evergreen leases. No. Places are sitting vacant because people refuse to pay $2500+ a month for a shoebox. They don’t get it. you lower prices and gasp people start paying. But all they can get through their thick as fuck skulls is a JG Wentworth commerical “I need cash now” they can’t think of the long term. Would you rather a consistent and steady income on your rental property over years with a tenant that has happy to pay decent rent? or would you rather potentially make more for a single year and then sit on a vacant unit because no one wants to pay your prices. And these morons pick “you’re saying I’ll have a lot of money for one year?”

I understand this, but you have a realize, how much of the province of ontario is toronto? you have to have a outside lens to things when you see the criticism people have when they see “XYZ toronto” and not their city. Things like this are going to enamor their hate for the city and cheer on doug ford for “Cutting the waste” that their city could of used.

Taking the lane is usually the safest way to bike, and when Sage I let cars pop ass as a safe I let cars pass as a courtesy.

But I am taking the lane because it’s safe, and the road is mine too. I pay my taxes, it’s my right.

Safety is not even an excuse, but an actual fair concern. If cars can’t give a damn about passing bikes with sufficient distance, then you’re putting yourself at danger by allowing them to do that.

    Cross posted to https://lemmy.ca/c/fuckcars

Doug Ford and his supporters talk about “the war on cars”. So on one side of this war we have cars. Who’s on the other side of this war? I think it’s a war between cars and people and unfortunately Doug is fighting on the cars side against people.

sigh…fuck cars…they are never going to go away. Listen I’m not allowed to drive and rely on public transit, and wish there was more investment in that, but going around saying “fuck cars” is not going to fly with like 99% of people.
