Account security should be a legal requirement for a cell operator.
Especially while living next to a hostile superpower.
You should always stay away from subscriptions as a knee-jerk reaction. Subscription? BOOM! The door of the mind closes.
So the bogus connection fee is ‘gone’ and now they are testing the waters with stuff like this?
How long before you can’t phone people with the $8 Monthly Security unless you also pay for the $8 Monthly Security?
That’s a nice phone you got there.
Be a real shame if something happened to it.
How about a little protection money just to make sure nothing happens?
Why are they trying to sell insurance now?
If that $8/mo gave me a phone that was actually secure? Maybe.
I’m talking about auditable open source from the lowest level hardware to every app in the app store. Encrypted everything. Proven track record of defeating government warrants. Privacy protections (and ID spoofing) around every aspect. Hardware kill switches for speakers, microphone, cameras, location, cell data, wifi, bluetooth, etc. Built-in faraday cage. No biometrics. Automatic secure deletion of all private data on detection of any intrusion attempt, including opening of the phone’s case.
For a phone like that, I could see paying $8/mo.
You could donate $8/month to GrapheneOS… 😉
GrapheneOS could try supporting handsets that don’t involve handing $1000 directly to Google if they want more donations.
Are pixels that much, our provider hands them out for a 24 month bill at $20…so $480. But I got the previous years model for $9 per month
