At the press conference, David Reevely from The Logic asked Joly how the money for an American company’s subsidiary jibed with the government’s “elbows up” message.

Since the announcement of the Defence Industrial Strategy, Canada has said it will spend billions on missile systems from Lockheed Martin. National Defence Minister David McGuinty has also argued that Palantir Canada — a branch of the American billionaire-founded artificial intelligence company working with Israel — is a Canadian company.

Eighty-two per cent said Canada should “defend itself without relying too heavily on other countries,” the poll found. U.S. companies, including those operating subsidiaries in Canada, were the least favoured.

Just like with the majority foreign-owned fossil fuel industry in Alberta, ‘our’ Government will give money to foreign/US corporations and sell it to us (with no questions asked by mainstream media) as ‘sovereignty’. Obviously anyone who thinks the CPC offers something better for working Canadians is delusional

It’s always a grift with these types. Only an ideologue that would stand against private international capital and really invest domestically would do the thing for real. Sovereign defence means creating the specialists across the stack from R&D through engineering and manufacturing, in Canada. Then creating the local industry that makes the things we need to make. Only then we’ll get the meaningful decoupling Canadians seem to want, along with any military keynesianism benefits for this spending. But that’ll take years to decades of consistent public industrial policy to achieve. Otherwise we’re just padding the pockets of American capital. Barring that, buying from RTX and Palantir’s Canadian subs is just business as usual with sovereign marketing, in the hope people don’t perceive the gov’t as not standing up for Canada while betting we won’t have to use those weapons as a deterrent against the US. In other words, elbows up marketing, while waiting for the US to “get back to normal.”

I’m absolutely not defending military industrial complex spending but do people understand the aerospace industry? The canadian owned companies are using PWC engines. Bombardier and De Havilland both use them (the two companies that come to mind when I think of canadian ownership). Magellan makes engine parts…does that count?

Let us never forget that it was the Conservatives that shut down our own military development and sold our defence contracts to the US.

The party doesn’t matter. Historically the Canadian conservatives have been the anti-US party.

It was the US forcing us. Ever since we formed they have acted as though they have authority over us. The fear of that is why no one wanted independence.

The most recent example was the World Cup, the US just decided the unprofitable matches would be paid for by Canada and Mexico.

Historically like how far back are we talking? Because for the last half century they’ve been pretty damned pro-us-business.

You’re right that both parties are, so party doesn’t really matter, but it seems disingenuous to characterize the conservatives (not a specific party, conservative parties in general) as being especially or uniquely anti-usa in their actions, since the start of the cold war.

You say that like the Tories were anti US out of some high minded principles. They just had a different empire they were cozying up to before. They were anti US because they were monarchists. They bent the knee to Britain, and when Britain went down they found new boots to kiss. The Tories never believed in Canada.
