Two leaked audio clips potentially revealing corruption at the highest level of the BC Conservative party are strengthening the political tornado that has engulfed the party amid an exodus of key staffers and MLAs.
Why would they want to leave anything behind? They’re trying to burn it all down, if they leave anything of value behind it’ll just get burnt as well… The opposition party gets to come in and repair the damage, start the rebuild, justify why they’re needing to ask for more money than the previous guys, and then get kicked out just before the fruits of their labor begins to yield.
I hit a paywall and I don’t know enough about Canadian politics. Anyone feel like explaining this to me?
British Columbia’s provincial conservative party is very right wing for Canada, and at times openly racist and colonial. They are kind of a new party assembled from the right wing fringe, and they have been recently shedding elected members because of the toxicity.
So on top of this, some audio recordings were recently released, putting things in an even worse light, including a suggestion of resigning to trigger a byelection in exchange for financial reward, and one of the more obnoxious separatist members talking about embezzling from party fundraising.
So, win at any cost and damn the rules, and the usual authoritarian Grift.
So who are they colonizing?/I didn’t know Canada and BC where creating colonies.
So, in the late 1980s, BC had the Social Credit (socreds) party, which was generally neoliberal.
The leader of the party was caught flipping properties to offshore interests and functionally destroyed his party.
The movers in that party jumped ship to a nascent and mostly irrelevant BC Liberal party. This includes then-future premier Gordon Campbell and most of his ministers
With the help of neoliberal media: global news, CTV, and the Vancouver Sun(newspaper), they astroturfed that the NDP were doing a horrible job; won power in the early 2000s. They generally ran the province into the ground, not completely fucking up the rapid transit to the airport and did a good job on the Olympics.
He retired in disgrace, was replaced by far right Christy Clark.
When she lost power, the party split into two, the remaining neolibs, and the splinter far right Cons.
Last election, the leader of the BC Liberal party unexpectedly jumped ship and intentionally cratered the party to try and seize power within the Conservative party.
Socreds: Bill Vanderzalm was the populist leader and Premier in the '80s. Trump would have liked him. He ran a tulip and gardening supply empire, and lived at his paid attraction, Fantasy Gardens. You can’t make this up.
He was renowned for his populist stupidity, to the point where there was a best-selling (in Canada) collection of his quips called Quotations from Chairman Zalm, and yes it is a little red book.
The application of democracy sometimes gives me trouble. Democracy requires that you set up a lot of committees and commissions.
It’s like you never get a second chance to create a first impression.
We can somehow figure out what it is that people really want or like without them telling us.
By strengthening the strong, we can help the weak.
Crispy Clark: like Poillievre, never had a real job other than spouting off. Extremist Christian, but to maintain power she had to hide just what kind of depraved beliefs she followed, like Stephen Harper.
Canada has always had a problem with extreme populism. And it’s not over.
Ahhh, it’s so nice to think about a world where leaked audio that reveals racist or illegal or otherwise bad behavior results in some consequences
Thanks for the context
I’m surprised that any conservative has enough of an issue with grift to leave their party. Probably just worried that they’ll get caught in the backlash.
