Socreds: Bill Vanderzalm was the populist leader and Premier in the '80s. Trump would have liked him. He ran a tulip and gardening supply empire, and lived at his paid attraction, Fantasy Gardens. You can’t make this up.

He was renowned for his populist stupidity, to the point where there was a best-selling (in Canada) collection of his quips called Quotations from Chairman Zalm, and yes it is a little red book.

The application of democracy sometimes gives me trouble. Democracy requires that you set up a lot of committees and commissions.

It’s like you never get a second chance to create a first impression.

We can somehow figure out what it is that people really want or like without them telling us.

By strengthening the strong, we can help the weak.

Crispy Clark: like Poillievre, never had a real job other than spouting off. Extremist Christian, but to maintain power she had to hide just what kind of depraved beliefs she followed, like Stephen Harper.

Canada has always had a problem with extreme populism. And it’s not over.
