Would this include XR glasses? they don’t use their cameras to store footage, only to help with positioning elements in an AR world.

If Canada was as hell bent on being “elbows up” as we like to pretend to be we’d tell these liberals to go fuck themselves with their data centers and to ban all this spyware American garbage. But Carney is a fiscal conservative capitalist at heart and he only cares about profits over people like the rest of them.

Canada currently saves huge data, including medical records, in US based data centres via the cloud. We need sovereign data storage.

OK but we are not getting that we are getting American companies to build them. And guess what American companies can and have to get data out of data centers in other countries when asked by the government. Where the data is stored doesn’t matter we need Canadian companies storing it.

While I don’t disagree that they are very unlikely to reign in any of the Tech Bro’s, stating it in that way makes it sound like you believe that if someone else were in the Liberals position, that they’d actually do what is best for the citizens of this Country.

Expecting anything other than right leaning centrism from the Liberals is incredibly foolish, that’s all they are and all they’ve been for my entire life. Even if the NDP were in (which is an incredible long shot), I’d be incredibly surprised if they actually did any of the things that would objectively help the citizenry before the Epstein class.

Also, I’ve not heard of anything the Liberals are doing with Monero or Cash, care to share any info?

So, we know for absolutely sure that scammers are in fact using Crypto ATM’s for their scams. While I get that it’s a hassle if you want to use an ATM for such a transaction, how many people in the crypto spaces actually use those ATM’s for non crime related shit? Most everyone I know involved in crypto would never trust an ATM style machine.

Are you running into people using those particular ATM’s in the Crypto space, or are you just disliking how the govt is responding to scammers?

I’m sure you’re probably right, but do you believe our Government to be capable of actual high tech solutions to something like scamming 70+ year old grandma’s out of their money? Our same Government (along with most of the rest of the Western world) that is actively making it so encryption will be heavily curtailed, if not made completely illegal “for the children”.

Just because 2% or so of the population has a grasp of how Crypto stuff works doesn’t make it reasonable for the majority. There may be the odd older non tech background person that’ll learn all about it, but that’s not even going to be even a meaningful minority.

So, you’ve brought up your (honestly relatively minor but valid, all things considered) issues with how they’re dealing with Crypto ATMs and the scams we all know are happening every single day.

You’ve not commented on any other point I made, I’d like to hear what the Govt is doing against Cash. And whom you think is a viable solution that’ll actually do what we the citizenry need VS. what big business is going to force on us. Pointing out the issues while using inflammatory language generally doesn’t lead to any outcomes you might actually want, as much as it’d be nice if it did.

Which political group are you suggesting should get support, and why do you believe they actually deserve it? I’ve no idea how old you are, but in my 42 years, I’ve yet to see any of them stand up against big business, obviously the Liberals being lead by an objectively Big Business C level isn’t going to do much of anything for citizens directly, they always think that supporting business directly supports us, which it does not and has not in my entire life.

If we’re just here to criticize Carney and the Liberal party of Canada, that’s fine. But we’re never going to collectively solve anything if we can’t even discuss their political actions reasonably.

Not high tech enough to go after scam crypto ATMs meanwhile the federal government blocks obscure vpns from accessing their websites.

The liberals hate freedom so they ban Monero.

Just repeating the same shit over and over isn’t going to result in any kind of discussion about how to actually move forward. You just seem mad that “your team” didn’t win this round with no evidence whatsoever to support your apparent claims that someone else would be superior in the current political climate.

I’ve personally stopped a 70+ yar old woman from taking Bitcoin out of one of those ATMs. The scam isn’t the ATM itself (it is, but not in this context) it’s the dude sitting overseas (usually) that’s running a social engineering scam.

The fact you’re dead set on nothing more than “Liberals bad” without any actual thought spent to which politicians are actually in favour of things we collectively want says everything needed about your complete lack of actual understanding about politics.

Just another pot stirrer with thing of substance to add.

You know full well “your team” wouldn’t do anything different than the Liberals, and yet you can do nothing but yell into the void about how the liberals are bad. The reality is they’re all largely all shit, and none of them want to help us. So insofar as that point you’re correct. Where your whole ideology falls apart is that you’re not even willing to put words to what you actually want and who might actually accomplish it.

Sad really, I was hoping for better interaction from Lemmy, but it’s clear that most folks only want to complain and not discuss solutions at all.

Good luck with that I suppose.

Just ban smart glasses that work with US social media. Dual use ban, covers almost all use anyway and pokes a particular regime in the eye to irritate them.

I’m quite torn on this topic.

On one hand, yes, it’s an issue, people are misusing them, ans commit actual acts of crime with it. I also see the problem of feeding a constant stream of high quality video with precise location data to companies that have proven time after time that they cannot be trusted with this data.

But on the other hand, these glasses can be immensely useful. For blind and vision-impaired people, this can read store signs, labels, any text of any packaging they’re looking at, any sign that might not have low vision helper.

It can help people in foreign countries to communicate - translate for each other, translate written things, and so on.

Even for the average Joe it can be super helpful in capturing moments you might miss if you were to pull your phone out. See someone get attacked? Bam, high resolution picture of their face. Video of the entire incident, recorded.

Cracking down on the creeps and forcing Meta to give up absolute control over the glasses would be the right way to go about this. Hell, make Meta call the police whenever someone uses their glasses for creeping! if they can run 24/7 facial recognition on the glass streams, they most certainly can alert the authorities when someone is recording people agains their will…

And there’s also a third issue with this legislation. How do you define the term “smart glasses”? Because right now, 3-4 distinct product groups use the term interchangeably:

    • the basic mic+speaker combo, used to trigger smart assistants and music playback
    • the “creep glasses” - glasses with built in cameras on top of the mic+speaker. Made by Meta but also Chinese manufacturers (these ones usually only send data to the connected smartphone, so no Meta spying concerns - there’s even open source, fully local app alternatives for them)
    • HMD (head mounted display) glasses. These usually have speakers and displays, some provide a level of spatiality or even AR/XR experiences. Most have no cameras at all, or if they do, it’s a limited, down-pointed, low resolu IR camera for hand tracking (see Viture, Xreal, etc)
    • the true smart glasses - Google’s Project Aura, the rumoured upcoming Apple glasses fall in this category. Glasses with built in processing, completely standalone, with displays, full range of cameras, et cetera,

Which category are we banning? What’s the basis of the ban? Is it privacy and the potential of recording in secret? If yes, are we banning smartphones too? AI note takers (see e.g. Plaude’s pendant recorders)? Cameras hidden in pens, phone chargers? Are we going to ban ultra small USB webcams because someone could easily embed it in their clothing and record secretly?

Are we also to ban IP cameras because most manufa don’t give a flying shit about security and said cameras can be easily accessed even by skiddies? Are we also going to crack down on companies offering stores cheap “analytics” based on CCTV when they’re known to be selling that data as well? Hell, just ban all cameras, and microphones.

We can have all the benefits without many of the downsides if we fixed the perverse incentives on harvesting data. Ban creeper glasses. Regulate and license these glasses as they should be used: medical assistance devices with strict controls on use of data.

The problem never was technological. The problem has always been regulating and limiting how people use tools in negative ways, from guns, cars, drugs, food, etc. For some reason we are blind to the idea of doing more of the same with big tech? This is long overdue.

I don’t think this is going to make the perverts stop using it for pervert things; and as far as I can tell that’s the main reason the general public hates these glasses, not the data harvesting angle.

        The problem never was technological.

And I think the problem became technological when we made affordable recording POV so covertly
