Some Canadian stakeholders have argued for the government to target US swing states with retaliatory tariffs, to put political pressure on Republicans. But Brian Clow, a former senior Canadian adviser on trade and US relations, said the midterms shouldn’t be a major factor for Canada’s approach to negotiating tariff relief with the US.
“Nobody should expect the Democrats to save Canada or come to our rescue when it comes to Donald Trump’s tariffs,” Clow said. “Although there are some voices speaking out against Donald Trump’s tariff policy, many of them aren’t speaking out against it and may actually support it.”
Trump is the symptom, not the cause.
The cause is that Americans are Americans and always will be. They are bullies by culture and by nationality. They were raised to believe that America would always be number one, and would always call the shots. It was never about America the defender of the free world, it was always about America the undisputed power of the world.
For seventy years, that was true. All world economic metrics had America 80% rest of the world 20%. Now, it is more like America 30% rest of the world 70% or better, and Americans are just not able to accept that. The rest of the world, that 70% ,is now their enemy, period. Well, maybe not directly their enemy, but the target of their adversarial nature. They believe in win-lose negotiations, and can not accept that America no longer calls the shots, that it is either win-win (which to an American means they-win-America-loses) in negotiations, and that makes them very, very dangerous, collectively, no matter who leads them. T\he Thucydides Trap. Research it and you will understand what is happening in America.
Agreed; let’s not forget that theUS was already found guilty of setting illegal tariffs against Canadian goods long before Trump took power.
The only difference is that the original tariffs were actually of strategic benefit for US industry and the new ones just funnel money to the rich.
If the Democrats seize the reins of government, fixing trade relations with Canada is going to be a long way down the list, and when it’s finally addressed, they’re still going to want concessions for each tariff they remove.
Not illegal, free trade with the US means only the US can use tariffs. The US courts sided with the US.

Same outcome sort of, but the older ones gave entire industries a long term advantage that actually benefited the US as a whole. The new ones are just a federal cash grab.

Careful tariffs can help shield a local industry against an exploitative economy in another country, which could result in benefits to a larger workforce / population.
But “tariffs so American automakers get higher profits so they can do more stock buybacks” ain’t it. (Example; I don’t really know who other than Trump is benefiting from current tariffs)
The money from the current tariffs goes into the income tax bin to offset the strategic tax cuts for the wealthy.
This is also why the US can’t just get rid if them; they’d have to find the money somewhere else.
As an American Democrat this is bullshit. Fuck tariffs. trump is a demented rapist sociopath, if we can get a significant majority we’ll finally be able to stop or at least heavily limit his idiocies to a large extent.
Democrats have traditionally been more in favour of protectionism than the Republicans. Don’t forget corporations are loving these tariffs because it basically blocks foreign competition.
Trump’s tariffs have nothing to do with that though - they’re just a product of his fevered ignorance and greed.
Actual industry-serving tariffs are still valid though with the utter shitshow of these “liberation day” idiocies I don’t know if there’ll be a lot of political will to use them anytime soon.
Either way, we have a lot of repairing to do. Which I suggest we start off by jailing this sonofabitch for any number of his seemingly limitless crimes.
