That’s a hanging manits, you must be mistaken
They’re an invasive species, actually.
And, no, they won’t be killed off by the cold. Or, at least their eggs won’t.
Aren’t we outside their range?
Nope, I have seen at least two different species, one like in the photo and a chonky brown one.
There is one native to North America (the brown one) and then this bad boy is from Asia
I thought they were praying.
Probably. I’m not an insectologist.
Neither did I! Neat!
Crazy; I had one land on me just last weekend; first one I’ve ever seen in the lower mainland. I had been wondering if perhaps it was someone’s escaped pet.
Unless we’re neighbours, it sounds like this is more than that.
This is from WSU in '04, and I’m willing to bet that these lovelies have been busy in those 23yrs between. 🥰
FWIW, I’ve called the PacNW home for longer than that, and have always enjoyed discovering mantids each summer.
Quite far out of it’s range I think (limited presence?). Maybe an escaped/abandoned pet. Will likely die once it gets colder.
*you should go back and adopt it :3
