Great resource, thanks! I played 0 A.D. for the first time recently, and was amazed by how polished it was.

Side note for anyone hoping that there is a free version of Morrowind: you still need to have Morrowind to play OpenMW. OpenMW is an open source (and improved) clone of the game’s rendering engine, but you still need the game’s content (models, textures, maps, etc.) from the original game.

OpenMW is a full engine, not just a rendering engine. And as of the recent release, for those that may not know, it’s technically capable of launching levels and worlds in Bethesda games up to Fallout 4, though of course they’re just loading maps, not scripts or other non-MW logic. (Yet, we might see that in the future)

I wonder if there is anybody out there insane enough to make a project like FreeDOOM.

Come to think of it, there are so many graphical enhancement mods for Morrowind, I’d bet that every asset has already been recreated by someone already. There might already be something close to a libre reimplementation of Morrowind, except for rewriting the dialog and quest scripts. Which would be a lot. Ok, close-ish, maybe.

I’d much rather see a standalone RPG built on OpenMW (without using Bethesda’s assets or world). I’ve recently played a bit of Project Cyrodiil – it it weren’t set in the TES universe, it could be a standalone game.

Probably, but 1:1 reproductions of assets, especially to reproduce the whole game, would be a copyright violation.

RekMod is an excellent balance pass and similar to the popular LekMod from original Civ5. There’s also mods for the expansion rules/content; Gods & Kings and Brave New World if you prefer to stick to RAW.

Ancient Civilizations and Community Maps add a TON of civs and quality maps, though I must mention that vanilla UnCiv provides very granular control over map generation already. CM does have really sweet “pre-constructed” maps though.

DeCiv Redux and Alpha Frontier are complete overhauls and have little to nothing in common with Civ5 aside from basic gameplay. DeCiv is fun, I haven’t tried Alpha Frontier yet though.

Graphics-wise there are tilesets as well as alternate unit art. I personally have 5Hex Tileset and AbsoluteUnits. Looks like some mods have FantasyHex as a dependency as well.

There’s many many mods besides these, but this is the list I’ve personally curated over ~100ish? hrs playtime.

        Did I mention there’s multiplayer?

          Nice, thank you so much!

I got my ass kicked in the last days with vanilla, but it was pretty fun.

I’m going to try DeCiv Redux now :)
