I know this has been said before, but I think it needs to said again. We can boycott things like Kellogg’s or whatever American product we want, and those are great ways to do so, but they’re smaller hits.
But to really hit America where it hurts, we need to boycott the following en masse:
1.) Walmart outright boycott. They’ll be pissed when their stores here sit empty and will complain to the orange nut job about it.
2.)Amazon. Full stop. You have prime. Cancel. You use their services? Stop.
3.) Costco. This one is painful for a lot, but will send a major signal to the U.S. They are most likely the best of the 3 companies I’ve mentioned since they treat their employees well and have stood up to Trump. They’re still American and we as a country are still at war with them.
4.) Streaming services: They’ve threatened our national language and they’ve threatened us when we instituted a digital tax. Vote with your wallet. If you have these services, just cancel them. You can find what you need in other ways. Netflix / Apple TV / Prime / HULU / etc - cancelled
Yes it sucks. Yes it’s hard, but those companies need to feel pain. If not they’ll carry on because our money is going to their profit. The shareholders don’t care. Americans are beholden to their shareholders. Make them feel the pain.
We can give up convenience for a bit. Maybe as we give these services up, some Canadians will come in a build out some of these services.
This is an economic war waged by a rapist and an administration that think we don’t deserve to be a country.
Let’s prove them wrong.
Cancel your memberships or don’t renew and divert your money away from them. This is especially true for Costco whose membership fees are a massive part of their income structure.
We don’t keep our independence by feeding the American oligarch machine.

Boycotting everything else makes sense, but there’s no reason to choose Canadian cronyism and monopolies over Costco saving me hundreds of dollars of years every year and getting more for less.
Costco can’t be replaced because Canadian interests dont have competition.
Despite everything I think now is the time to institute a full stop on foreign purchases of Canadian companies, force the sale of all American shares in Canadian media companies, and break up Canadian monopolies to force competition and innovation back. Into our market.
Costco is also one of the only Fortune 500 companies to not adjust their policies on DEI in the wake of Trump’s election.
People love costco, a boycott won’t catch on there. It’s one of the most loved companies in retail I would posit even.

Small share: yesterday I bough a kitchen scale at the store, thinking it’s Chinese, but something didn’t sit right and I looked up the company profile, saw it was American, and returned it within the hour. Then found Canadian Tire sold a similar product by a company from PEI, that turned out to be even cheaper and better (USB chargeable rather than with AA batteries).
I think it is very telling that you think people choose to use cheaper options. Of all things people have control over where they spend money, groceries is about the worst place to start. Like, have you seen what Loblaws or Sobeys costs? No Frills is even too expensive anymore. Costco is like, the only place in this country where many people can afford to buy enough food for an entire family; fuckin even the pharmacy products are a third of the price there oftentimes.
Streaming services and Amazon, sure, I stopped using both years ago because streaming is too expensive already and Amazon has been evil for much longer than Trump has been in office (either time), but I also know many people don’t know how to use alternatives to these, which means they’ll continue using them. Ive met people who think I’m taking a bigger risk pirating everything than what’s worth just paying for Disney Plus. There’s dudes in this country who make money setting up and maintaining Android Boxes for rubes who don’t know it’s just an app you can download and setup in about ten minutes with an online guide.
I know this isn’t the best community for this, but this is why boycotting is not a super effective tactic. They don’t usually adopt a level of class consciousness or understanding that these companies are dominant because they’re already coercive. Walmart’s entire business strategy is to parasitically starve out local grocers and then hike up prices in what is essentially (or then literally) a food desert, many people use them because they cannot afford something else. For me, Costco is the more “ethical” option because I can afford to go there and they actually pay their employees something, and it’s not like I can afford Canadian grocers in this fuckass racket.
If you’re relying on middle-class people who spend money frivolously to change, you can expect maybe two or three months out of them before they quietly just do what they’ve always done.
To me, Costco seems better than Roblaws (NF, Atlantic, Superstore, SDG), a bit better than Empire (Sobeys, Safeway Canada, Freshco, Farmboy etc.) and about equal to Pattison and Metro. They treat their workers well, have not dropped people-focused diversity initiatives just because political winds have changed, and have sued the Trump admin for tariff refunds. I do shop local fruit and veg markets, but I’m not sure what signals we intend to send from a boycott of Costco.
As a compromise, Costco does have a lot of Canadian products available. And several of their Kirkland branded products are Canadian made (at least in the Canadian market).
Kirkland toilet paper and shampoo are 2 Canadian made items that I can see from where I’m sitting.

But cancelling Prime and avoiding Amazon is something people can do now without having to figure out if a website is using AWS.
You’re right, but most of us mortals are outside of the web services / virtualization world to even be able to tell what small mom and pop company is using an AWS service for their site.
This is more about stopping them with the end consumer products and services. If we stop buying from them, they’ll hopefully pack up and leave the country.

If you can install uBlock Origin you can tell if a particular site is using AWS.
Costco is pretty ok, but not great either. Most of the food is not Canadian. Ordering from costco.ca uses UPS instead of a Canadian company. They’re not using environmentally friendly packaging.
Also rideshare and food delivery services.
Ditch uber and lyft for local Taxis. In Toronto at least, Beck taxis have a great app and their drivers actually know where they are.
Skip the Dishes is Canadian, the others are not. Or better yet, go out in the world if you can and pick up from a neighborhood restaurant.

I needed a new sports watch and Garmin is like THE runners brand. I went for Polar for being European and subjected to GDPR. It took very little time to adjust to it and now, I love it! Can’t see me ever going back.
I got an una watch I had mentioned in another thread. They’re from Scotland and made there.
It’s still early phases but it’s a module end user repairable watch with a developer environment so anyone smart enough can create apps for it.
So far I’ve given up things from my Apple Watch but haven’t really missed them and I’m a big exercise nut.

Boycott Walmart or Costco in Canada and the only thing you will accomplish is lots of Canadians getting laid off if the boycott goes on long enough.
Boycott USA products so Canadian workers can keep their jobs.
Shifting your purchasing to Canadian stores still helps employ Canadian workers.
But if you are only able to boycott one American store, Walmart is the most abusive of the options. They mistreat their employees, their suppliers and the local economies where they operate - and have done for decades.
