I’m not really that upset about conservatives winning overall but this makes me physically sick and is my single most important issue when it comes to my vote. It’s true they are going to cut it all and it’s not just a tragedy for BC but for the entire world. These ecosystems are some of the rarest on earth with thousands of endemic species. These forests, while small in numbers, still act as a buffer for climate change.

I’ll hopefully see you guys on the frontlines with me at Central Walbran this spring. They arrested 500 of us before giving up last time and it’s going to take a lot more of us holding the line this time.

In 1993 nearly 900 people were arrested at the Clayoquot protests and we can do it again. The facts are all there that those trees have made more money in tourism already than if they were cut down in the 90s.

Most conservative voters are christians, and to me, the cutting of these forests would be the equivalent of burning down their churches. This goes against every part of my worldview and I will risk everything to prevent it.

If this issue is important to you please get involved with the Ancient Forest Alliance. If you aren’t on the island you are welcome to stay at my house and I will happily drive you to camp and lend you any outdoor gear you will need.

If we’re going to log, we need a plan to log in segments that rotate on multi hundred year scales.

Decades for softwood, centuries for hardwood.

Japan figured this out hundreds of years ago and devised methods to regrow trees faster, straighter, and with denser wood. We can learn to do that too.

Japan also never logged yakushima, only cutting selective trees for important temples

Thankfully this has completely stopped and yakushima now relies on big tree tourism

@rabber I ditto these sentiments in the post. It’s always going to be incomprehensible that these corporations cannot understand these “forever” issues.

I don’t think that the elites agreeing to cut this have ever set foot inside of an untouched forest before. Anyone who has should be immediately convinced it’s off limits. It’s against everything we should be standing up for as humans, right wing or whatever you are. You feel such a primal connection to earth that is basically what nutjobs would describe as a religious experience.

And as a proud atheist for the first 25 years of my life, these forests have changed my entire perspective on spirituality after I relocated to the island. I don’t know what it is, but I no longer “believe in nothing”.

Even Hitler didn’t destroy Prague when he invaded it. There are just some things that are so special that I refuse to believe even a psychopath would destroy them without regret.

If these politicians want this cut, they should have to be forced to watch it be cut. It’s literal murder. Each tree is going to take hours to fell individually.

But they do understand. That means nothing if it’s unprofitable. A corporation exists purely to make money NOW and a well-run corporation will do so by any means available, ethics and good intentions be damned. Corporations can only be stopped by legal guardrails and the rare pushback strong enough to create a negative financial impact.
