Why is it national interest to ship OUT your oil? I’d think keeping it IN the nation would actually be national interest. Oh? That’s right, shareholder wealth…the rest is “f- the environment,” actually.
And as we’ve seen with Iran and Venezuela, oil production paints a bullseye on you.
Fundamentally, trade happens when you’ve got something that you don’t want as much as your neighbour does, but he has something that you want more than he does. The result is that each side gets something they wanted more.
We benefited trading with the UK. The US didn’t take over to benefit us. Don’t act like the Canada/US (or NAFTA) wasn’t the worst agreement in Canadian history.
All I see is our value added jobs went south of the border and we have to buy back our materials at a markup. If our materials ever undercut the US market then they’re tarriffed.
Depending on other nations to refine our oil leaves us vulnerable. Which is why if we nationalize and refine most of our own oil, it would allow us to keep profits within the Canadian economy. So trade isn’t always a positive.
We can build a pipeline a lot faster than we can build refineries. By all means do both, but the refineries won’t be online for many years after we’re already selling the unrefined stuff.

Because it’s shit oil, a pain in the ass to refine, and only adequate enough for bunker fuel.
Because trade is good for everyone involved? That’s something the Americans have completely lost the plot on.
Trade with the US was bad for Canada every year prior.
It wouldn’t have been if it was reliable.

Fundamentally it was just stealing from us to make them rich. Being unreliable is good for us.
It made both of us richer. Spare us this Trumpian zero-sum view, it’s normal for both trading partners to benefit.

It wasn’t now get out of here and educate yourself.
Even CUSMA has been beneficial for both parties.

Ever heard of Cancer Alley?
