Sounds like someone needs some anti-siphoning laws
Yes please I don’t watch hockey but it’s important to my culture.
Short on cash…lower the player’s salary.
The average NHL career is 4-5 years this is not the way
Because in 4-5 years even the lowest paid defenceman has enough to get the hell out. Hockey used to be a career.
Or the owners. You don’t have to immediately attack labor you know…
These companies have decided that I will never watch an N HL game ever again.
I’ll be watching World Juniors, Olympic Hockey and Women’s hockey though
My two nephews love sports. They love watching the CEBL and they are excited to watch the Victoire.
The New generation will move on to teams they can actually watch. The NHL customer base will erode and become less and less relevant over time as they lose kids not to just other forms of entertainment but to other sports teams that are free to follow.
This is a very short sighted move by the league. It really exists to push gambling more than anything else these days.
Their goal is to groom our kids into a generation of addicts just like drug pushers. They don’t care how many lives they destroy as long as they make a healthy profit this quarter.
I haven’t been able to watch the Grey Cup on TV for years. It’s all locked up for the paid subscription crowd. It kind of sucks that a Canadian citizen needs to join something and pay money to cheer on their team.
First, watch rugby like a real Canadian.
If the time differences for games wasn’t so harsh, I would absolutely watch rugby. And Aussie rules football.
Hockey is a rich white people game, at least in North America. I love it, but it is what it is. By limiting hockey to mostly rich white kids, the talent pool has dried up and the quality of the games has really suffered. And they want to expand even more because “money”.
Baseball is cheap to play. Basketball is cheap to play. Soccer (sorry rest of the world) is cheap to play. Football is even cheap to play. Hockey? Two pounds of flesh and your first born, for a stick.
Not LaCrosse?
Fills a different niche.
I am not watching men’s hockey again until they deal with their rape problems.
Hope you’re prepared to never watch hockey again then. Rich (mostly) white dudes rape women constantly and never see actual consequences.
I am totally prepared to not watch rapists play hockey. I am completely anti-rape. Consent rocks. In fact I support the death penalty for rape and pedophilia.
Good, I’m glad to hear it. There aren’t enough of us calling out these scumbags, let alone willing to avoid their content/sport.
Actually having the wherewithal to personally boycott something you disagree with is an very low % of our population, and it’s honestly gross.
I don’t understand people that get excited and insist on watching millionaires fight for a puck while others around them can’t afford groceries.
Good luck to them against the capitalism they cheer on.
Everyone in the stands surrounding the players can, in fact, afford groceries. It’s the tv watchers that are more likely not to be able to, but now there’ll be less of those.
compel private media companies to license sports events of national importance to TV stations that will air them free of charge.
Strongly against this, the NHL is not a charity. Why not “compel” them by legislation to give away licensing to Canadian media instead of forcing media companies to buy?
Greedy piggies. Tha hand of the market must be slapped when it overreaches and amputated if it can’t be trained.
You misunderstood my point, I think. I meant I was against giving them more money by mandating that media companies do so.
Yeah, there’s nothing quite like unbridled capitalism. So why are you for it? Does Rogers and the NHL not have enough profits for you to feel joy on their behalf?
Its not even (entirely) about Rogers.
In order to see all of some team’s games you need to subscribe to Sportsnet and TSN and Amazon. And even then there will be games blacked out for regional reasons.
I blame that fragmented bullshi completely on the league’s greed.
How come it comes across from my comment that I am in favour of Rogers OR the NHL? I am a pretty big hater of both exactly because of unbridled capitalism.
So you aren’t against unbridled capitalism and your defense for opposing the proposal is the strawman of compelling them to give it away rather than compelling them to sell at a reasonable rate as the article suggests. So which is it? Unbridled, or regulated? Only you are suggesting they should do it for free.I understand now. You’re legitimately suggesting that. I thought it was an extreme suggestion to point to the absurdity of what is actually being asked. Tone in text sucks.
Well, I’m not against that either.
