This might actually be a genius malicious compliance play, seeing how the boycotts of American made goods and alcohol are largely a grassroots movement by the citizens.
Appeasing the US by allowing their alcohol back on the shelves, only for it to largely sit there as unmoving product would definitely be a great way to honour the contract without reducing the impact of the message.

Except that we should have learned by now that trying to appease a country who won’t honor their own agreements is pointless.
What guarantees can there be that the US won’t just reneg again after we appease them again?
They should have to demonstrate some level of trustworthiness before we even think about backing down.
The issue with that is, by the time the US liquor is sitting on the shelf for sale the US producers already got paid. The liquor is first bought by provincial distributors, even in Alberta via the AGLC, and then sold to the public from government stores, or sold to private liquor stores who then sell to the public. So if that US liquor hits the shelf and we boycott it, it’s either our provincial governments or local liquor stores that take the hit. That’s why the provincial level bans are angering the US liquor industry so much.

Albertan here. Despite our government putting US booze back on the shelves a year ago, and despite being the most US-loving, redneck province in the country, US alcohol sales are down about 70% across rhe board.

Unfortunately the death of CUSMA would destroy many Canadian small businesses, my own included. Nobody would buy my product if it suddenly shot up 20%-50% in price, even though there’s no American alternative.
I’d rather we keep the fight up, but if we can get some leverage and buy time for US politics to shift, it’ll probably be worth it.
Problem is the federal government is not in charge of alcohol sales. That is a provincial decision.
It’s not about US politics shifting. We’re buying time to decouple our economies. If you are waiting for a return to normalcy with the US, you are going to be sorely mistaken.
US politics isn’t going to shift. This is just the beginning. You should base your business decisions on that.

US politics is never shifting back. If I had a business that relied on American suppliers, I would find suppliers in the EU or Asia or find a new line of work.
Well I pay more to get stuff from Canadian suppliers without using Amazon.
But I’m lucky to have the option to make that choice.

Has there been any comment from provincial governments on this? The alcohol bans aren’t federal and the Canadian government really has no say. Keeping the bans in place also appears overwhelmingly popular across the country. Sixty-nine (*high five*) percent are in favour of the bans and the same majority say they won’t buy US booze even if the bans are lifted.
Quebec said they’re not going to lift the bans so far.

While this won’t make a huge practical difference (can’t force people to buy the stuff), capitulating to Trump only lets him take another step forward. He will never concede ground or come to an agreement. He’s a bully, and giving him what he wants will never be enough.
The gov may lift the ban, and put the bottles back on the shelves; but we’re still not buying it.

/edit: I should also note; each province enacted their own ban. It’s not up to the federal government whether we lift the bans, each province would have to agree separately.
The Canadian government saying that the ban is lifted is meaningless because they never banned alcohol anyway, as it’s not their jurisdiction.
I guess when you’ve preemptively announced that you’re not going to retaliate against the illegal tariffs in any way that would get their attention, such as putting export duties on petroleum products, you end up with little choice other than to give them whatever they want.
