U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an order directing the interior secretary to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” as Canada trade war persists.
Trump cannot force Canada to follow his preferred naming convention, however.
The move is reminiscent of his move last year to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”
Lets rename Lake Michigan to Lake Ontario Jr.
I pissed my name into a bunch of fences as a kid. Didn’t make them my fences.
An interesting factoid - Lake Ontario is the SMALLEST of the Great lakes.
Just checked, Google Maps still calling it Lake Ontario.
But this is just the ammunition Vance needs to dethrone Trump after the mid-terms. "Rome burns while Nero fiddles’.
Not only are Trump’s antics the laughing stock in Canada, the laughter is spreading into America as well. Why is Trump throwing a hissy fit over the name of a Lake when the American economy is crumbing? This is his top priority?
It won’t take much for Vance to question Trump’s mental health and fitness for office when he is ready to act.
The American polls are against Trump on this issue. Just under 4 in five (79%) of Americans have a favorable impression of Canada. They may not be following the trade talks, but this message was directed at Americans, and it is hard for them to miss. Why is Trump so visibly trash-talking Canada? It has absolutely no political up side, with no hope it will be favorable to those Republicans who are facing Senate and House elections in three months. The more that Republicans distance themselves from Trump, the easier it is for Vance.
I have a feeling Vance is gonna wait until after the midterms and pull the 25th amendment card. If he does it before the midterms he can only serve 1.5 terms (if he were to win a general election), vs 2.5 terms if he waits until after.
And in this house hold we have decreed that the USA will, from now on, be known as Lala-land.
I used a sharpie and everything so very official. We will be persecuting everyone who does not use this name going forward.
Make a note on which maps companies comply in the US and boycott them.

That’s my knee-jerk reaction too, but on further reflection I’m not sure.
Sure, Google making sure it’s Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico in Google Maps is a nice thought, but that would be a strong political stand. Simply passing through the “official” names isn’t political, and I can’t judge too harshly companies not making specific political stands.
Ultimately, we have to all know that the names of these bodies of water will revert to their real names as soon as 'ol Donny kicks the bucket, right?
We have no assurances of that, and Google and Apple have no legal obligation to do this.
We have no assurances of anything in this life, but if I’m a betting man I put money on these stupid names being reverted when/if an adult is in the White House again.
And unless you work for Google/Apple/Microsoft in the GIS departments, you really have no idea if they do or don’t have legal obligation to pass through GNIS data.
BREAKING NEWS: Province of Quebec renames Mar-a-Lago to Merde-a-Lago
Pedo-a-Loto

Boy it would be nice if trump walked off a short bridge
Canada - 🥱. We and everyone else in the world still call it Lake Ontario. 🖕
🍁True North Strong and Free 🍁
Im ok calling the american half 'Lake Epstein" but the canadian half is Lake Ontario.
Reasonable.
Jfc whats the acronym for remembering the lake names supposed to be now? HAMES?
… oh, wait, no. Its SHAME. Maybe this ain’t such a bad shift in that light.
So if the US can just randomly rename stuff that doesn’t belong to them, Canada can too. I want to see them rename the entire United States to “Trump is a Pedophile”. That’ll look great on Google maps!
I’d also like to unilaterally rename Ontario, California (ie: Ontario, CA) for creating unnecessary confusion.
Maybe they’ll choose to rename it themselves? Like, maybe Manitoba, CA? That’s got a nice ring to it!
The US has a long history of changing the names of things because “fuck you”, Mt McKinley is actually Denali for instance.
Obama reverted it’s name to Denali, but of course Trump undid that.
Ultimately I think the solution is to call the mountain itself Denali (because of course that’s its name), and if you have to placate all the idiots in Ohio, rename the national park (because the park is a federally administered thing) to “McKinley.”
This is what I came here to say or updoot if already said. Pleeeeeease make it happen. I would absolutely love if the rest of the world just started renaming shit in and around the US.
He seems to think Canadians will care what they choose to call that body of water.
Doubt he does much thinking
He can call it what he will, but Canadians still call the Rogers Centre the SkyDome over 20 years later.
They could have just called it the Rogers Skydome, and nobody would have cared. I’m more mad about that than I am with the orange pedo having another tantrum with Lake Ontario.
It’s all just an attempted distraction from the Republicans’ ruinous economic and social policy. And hoping we forget about the Epstein files. Release the full Epstein files, with only victims images and PIA redacted.
But Rogers was just being senselessly stupid. They weren’t trying to cover up being pedophiles, afaik, so why did they do it?
Realest fucking thing in this thread honestly
Trump cannot force Canada to follow his preferred naming convention, however.
Trump cannot force anyone outside of the USA to respect his childish renaming bullshit.
He can’t even force Americans to play his stupid game, though I’m sure a bunch if them will happily play along.
