LibCon politicians would sell us out in an instant and collectively flee to Argentina or Israel…
If Canada will take Americans into their military (or Canadian foreign legion) to defend, I would immediately sign up to kill the conservative invaders. There is no peaceful solution to conservatism. Violence will be required to solve this infestation and every war conservatives start is an opportunity for them to be properly dealt with.
Canada has known this for years, its the default position. This is why Victoria is the Capital of BC and Ottawa is the Capital of Canada, just to make that final push a touch more difficult.
When trump calls Carney making deals a “hostile act” you know his handlers are letting him know that’s the first step.
The Canadian Armed Forces expect Canadians to go full Taliban on the US in the event of an invasion. Do I think Canadians have it in them to pull this off? 50-50, given how our current government enjoys disarming Canadians and dissuading firearm ownership it certainly doesn’t help prepare folks for this reality.
Defend? Yes.
Lose? Also yes.
Begin a long, ruthless, bloody painful insurgency that makes Vietnam and Afghanistan look like a retirement home sewing circle? TABERNAK LE FUCK OUI.
(for those who may not understand the switch to French, it is a reference to the phrase "will not fall until the last shell has been fired from the last cannon by the hand of the last French Canadian)
You really think middle-class Canadians have the same vim as people who fought imperialists for generations by the time Americans invaded? The way you guys respond to this shit with power fantasies is incredible.
I’m fine with people fighting the US, but I don’t think you’re going to do well if you think you’re able to welcome it.
I agree the comparison to other wars America lost is discord level discourse but appreciate the overall energy.
I’m afraid that as a middle class Canadian, I don’t understand your last sentence.
People talking as though they take pride in their supposed fortitude against the US aren’t the kind of people who understand what violence is like to live in by merit of thinking it would be glorious. I’m saying if you’re someone who thinks it is a given that Canadians would stomp the US or whatever in a guerilla war, you are welcoming something that you do not understand.
Violence and war is never glorious, it is a painful, horrific and most terrible thing. However, it has been repeatedly shown to have been unfortunately needed.
By its very definition no side “stomps” the other in a guerrilla war. The intent is to make the occupier so uncomfortable that they eventually give up. It is a classic example of fourth generation warfare.
You should read my other comment here on the casual interest in military history and inflated sense of authority with which you guys talk about this. You can’t make a comment like you made and then pretend it doesnt underplay the gravity of this possibility; especially after suggesting that, somehow, people in colonized spaces don’t have the fighting heart of some of the most privileged settlers in the fucking world.
Yeah, sure dude, totally, you understand what it is enough to know when it is “needed.” Cowardly.
I would think that a career of over fifteen years in the Canadian Armed Forces after having escaped from a country torn by civil war and genocide might give me some background in the topics of military force, the willingness of the CAF to fight and armed resistance against tyranny, but, as citizens of a (relatively) free country, we are all entitled to our opinions and allowed to voice them.
Most middle class Canadians?
Absolutely not
But enough to make every invader’s lives miserable? Oh hell yes. You only need a few dozen people in Canada yo pull this off and I know we have much, much more than that both in Canada AND US territories…
Combined with deeply intertwined societies, inherently porous border and absolutely no clear signifiers of whether an unknown individual is Canadian or American? Even a very small insurgency will be nighmarishly hard to deal with.
Never mind that it’s not hard to picture there being true sympathizers in the states in real numbers.
I think too many of you confuse your casual interest in military tactics and history as having the sufficient expertise to speculate on war. Nobody is saying there wouldn’t be fighting, Im saying Canadians do not understand what fighting would actually mean, and honestly, these kinds of comment threads are great examples of that.
I don’t think I’m arguing with that actually…
The point I’m making ISN’T that the blowhards and nationalists are actually who would fight… but that if ANYONE did, and someone would, it would be extraordinarily difficult to control. And frankly, the impact of actual fighting would be out of all proportion to how significant it really is militarily to the United States
You know what a thermobaric weapon is? You ever think about one landing on loved ones you live with; or living across the street from its target?
I don’t doubt there’s people who will fight back, I just know it isn’t you or many if any of the people on this site. The demos skew older, middle-class, STEM employed white cishet men, and the diversity ranges typically still include privileged classes. No Canadian settler alive has experienced war at the end of an imperial weapon like the US military; or any military. So, no, I don’t think the people on here who gleefully roleplay as guerilla freedom fighters from their desks really understand what they’re talking about.
This is where I wish the Canadian government would buy a couple.million assault riffles and ammo. Bring in ex military, police, and train them on the weapons and in insurgency tactics. Then if relations continued to slump start signing out weapons to those who are trustworthy. Think IRA weapons caches and team cells.
The US would definelty think twice knowing there were a few hundred thousand well armed individuals scattered around.
That’s roughly what the mobilization reserve is intended as
They can also lift the stupid gun bans from 2020 on and also have a civilian training program to show how to resist invasion and occupation effectively. We also need to vet people to build an ready made resistance force that can be activated in case on an invasion.
I was infantry.
Casuals do not need automatic weapons.
Disagree. “Casuals” are not stupid. They can be trained just like you were, and it’s not rocket science.
Never said automatic. The semi-auto bans are stupid as is the handgun freeze.
look at you guys larping.
You know why we don’t have that? Because Canada is a huge as fuck land-claim with an incredibly small population, and the state would be more concerned about anti-colonial or anticapitalist militias popping up than anything else. Canada is occupied territory.
Pretty much, and do not think for one moment that they’re concerned with criminal use of guns or mass shooters. They’re quite comfortable with those. The polytechnique shooting happening in 1989 was perfect timing for them to use it as an excuse for gun laws when the real reason was likely the Oka Crisis.
Vive le Canada libre.
This guy has literally never spoken to a single member of the Canadian military in his life.
I know soldiers in the CAF. There is no one in Canada more gung-ho to fight the yanks than the CAF. Even the guys who used to be big Trump fans, even the far right assholes, they’re all ready to throw hands. The few soldiers who still like Trump are treated as absolute pariahs right now. Everyone else accuses them of being cowards and traitors. Even if the Canadian government sent out an order to lay down arms, 90% of the CAF would ditch their uniforms and become insurgents. There’s shit I’ve heard people say that I can’t even share here because it would get people in serious trouble. Some of it because they shouldn’t be saying it, and some of it because civilians like me aren’t supposed to know about it.
Also, his digression about the threat modelling shows the depths of his ignorance. Yes, there are American liaison officers in Ottawa, of course there are. We’re in two separate military alliances with the US. That doesn’t prevent us from theory crafting about a possible US invasion, because that kind of thing is completely normal. Militaries plan for every possible eventuality because that’s their job.
This video is the biggest load of horseshit I’ve ever seen. Every single word of it was spectacularly and outlandishly wrong in some way or another. Whatever this guy might be good at, talking about the Canadian military isn’t it.
yup I work with a guy that was in the Canadian Armed Forces. He goes on about this all the time and says if it ever happens him and his old CAF buddies would re-enlist instantly. no questions. dude is itching to kill american soldiers. This is a guy who when he sees a telsa or cybertruck will spit on the ground and say “fucking nazis” all the time.
And I don’t think the average american understands how much we Canadians will fight for this country. not just our Armed Forces but average citizens and I mean hell once you go north of Southern Ontario the americans would be in for a world of hurt. I used to live in Northern Ontario and pretty much every dude up there has a rifle and all work in the bush. Half of me almost wants the americans to try it just to find out the cluster fuck they’d get themselves into.
If they can’t take Iran out, they sure as fuck ain’t taking us out.
There are guys I know of in the CAF who used to be hardcore Trump fans. Guys who would constantly whine about how they wish Canada was more like the US. Guys who idolized the American military.
Those same guys would shoot Trump in the face if they saw him now.
Yeah, they’re still right wing chuds. Yeah they still agree with 90% of his rhetoric. But none of that matters. He threatened our sovereignty. The moment that happened, he was dead to them.
And, I cannot emphasize this enough… the CAF as a whole is way less right wing than people think.
I regularly hang out with active duty reg force soldiers, and the ones I know are a mix of NDP voters, gay liberals, and genuine communists and anarchists. The CAF is a hugely mixed crowd. And while the enlisted do tend to skew somewhat conservative on the whole, the officers are all highly educated people (degrees are a requirement for officers) who tend to be much more liberal or left leaning.
It’s not unusual for these guys to pick “the KKK” as their fictional enemies for section attack training. I’ve seen a warrant threaten to punch out anyone they catch being transphobic. I know a retired gunner who goes on loud, unprompted rants about what a fucking asshole Pollievre is.
This mentality that the CAF are a bunch of Trump worshipping proto-nazis is ignorant idiotic hogwash from misguided leftists who’ve never stepped a toe outside of their bubble and it genuinely hurts the left wing cause in Canada because there is so much support just waiting for us in the CAF if we stopped treating them all as a write-off.
What I’d give for that kind of solidarity in the USA.
I’ve said before, if the Canadian military has any threat modeling of an American invasion force, the best move is to slow things down a bit, get critical military material out of bases, and have the military become the leadership of guerilla forces. We won’t win toe-to-toe, no matter how brutal the American losses are. But we look enough like Americans that we can blend in, we have a 5000 mile long border, and a very strong ‘not American’ national identity. We couldn’t stop them from taking our country, but it would cost them every day they stayed.
But we look enough like Americans that we can blend in, we have a 5000 mile long border,
And a lot of us have been to their cities enough times to be able to navigate without a map.
The French knew how to resist. We have some French. 1+1=2
The French resistance spent years to get started and relatively few of them were able to obtain a functional firearm, let alone other weapons.
We need to have a home guard that is basically a ready made defense force made up of people willing and able to be trained for it. Former or current military, police, and civilians trained for it but kept undercover that they were.
Around January 2022 I said something similar about Ukraine if Russia invaded.
Keep in mind that there will almost certainly be Americans that are willing to sabotage their own.
Likewise for Canadians. See: a large number of sellouts in Alberta.
I’ll admit Ukraine performed better than I expected, and Russia performed worse. Ukraine got a lot of foreign help, due in no small part to Russia’s imminent threat to the rest of Europe, real or perceived. I don’t know if the response if Canada was attacked would be the same, or greater, but I hope it is.
Article 5 is Article 5.
The EU could fall back on its own defensive pact, but that would mean losing the UK and Turkey.
Though if the US is smart about it they’ll coordinate with a Russian invasion of the EU.
Especially if the battlefield is near a blue state. NY comes to mind
I used to think this. Until our 1 million drones a year deal with Ukraine. Who is beating Russia, a similarly supposed asymetric power. The US is actively losing to Iran. Times and war has changed and the US is gutting their own productivity to fuel corruption.
Yep.
And we have a lot of smart people up here and even more stubbornness.
The folks who migrated to Canada from Europe instead of to the USA and remained were obviously tough enough not to be trifled with in ww1.
Yeah, the US is coasting on an impression of their might that used to exist but is now only a product of decades of Hollywood propaganda. Capitalism has enshittified their military the way it has everything else. A trillion dollar+ military budget that has never passed audit and pretty much isn’t expected to is actually just a corruption budget.
That said, I do agree with the video that Carney is using the threat of Trump to push for things that people might push back against without that threat hanging overhead.
Yes the whole supper power thing is in queation. I think America has coeuoted itself out of military might. Sure they spend a lot of money on military but I thibkntheir ROI has seceely decreased over the years.
They also wouldn’t have the unified support of the US citizenry. It’s very likely they’d face some turmoil from within.
Also hitting infrastructure to make life more difficult for the oligarchs like Ukraine did with Wildberries and oil depots would be very effective.
While I would hope so, I doubt it. They can’t even fight for themselves. Too apathetic and manipulated. I don’t believe for a minute that Americans would stand up for us. Maybe they would say so but action? Nope.
From A CBC article about follow up on Carney’s comments on contingency plans
There is, however, an increasingly puzzled reaction among some Americans who have grown accustomed to Trump’s threats, taunts and trolling.
Matthew Schmidt, an associate professor at the University of New Haven in Connecticut and a former instructor at the U.S. Army War College, said many Americans, including himself, are unaware of how Trump’s words affect people in other nations.
“I don’t think I have a visceral sense of what Canadians are feeling about the United States,” Schmidt said. “We really don’t have a sense of the impact of what the president is saying has on other places.”
He dismissed the notion of the U.S. military taking action against Canada, but said Carney has taken the prudent, responsible course of a leader and measured the risk.
I fall on the same side as you, I hope so, but doubt it, and while this snippet isn’t surprising at all to me, it still disappoints me. Yanks would probably see military action as just a joke or something at this point, or because it’s outside their borders, they wouldn’t care.
I’m being (hopefully) exaggerative and frankly antagonistic towards the Americans, but I’m increasingly annoyed by some of them (any time someone comes around to appolgise about how they’re not one of the bad people and it’s not all Americans, it’s tone deaf, ignorant and seems self-serving) and despise their government. They need to be aware of how they’re seen from outside, we do too.
He dismissed the notion of the U.S. military taking action against Canada,
Three years ago, he would probably have dismissed the notion of the US fighting a half-assed war of aggression against Iran, too. Guys, unless you get the nutcase out of the driver’s seat and ensure no one comparable can rise to power in your country again, everyone else has to plan for the worst.
They can’t even fight for themselves. Too apathetic and manipulated.
I’m sorry you believe this but if you truly do then you’re falling prey to the same manipulation.
Why? What are they doing? Three fair weather protests on a Saturday afternoon with 1% of the population? That’s an outing not a protest.
Lawsuits, protests, grass roots political campaigns at the state and local level to weaken the far right base.
If you want a violent revolution feel free to strap up and head south. Or maybe Canada could put more focus on their own increasing far right groups, or the UKs, or France’s, or Italy’s, or Germany’s, or Australia’s, or Austria’s, or the Netherlands’, or Finland’s, or Sweden’s, or Hungary’s, or Czechia’s, or Croatia’s.
Or maybe realize this isn’t an American problem but a human one and we all need to come together to quash it once and for all.
Or keep being distracted by the global elite’s shell game and media control and focus all your energy in being angry at a population being kept center stage through manipulated news coverage. They’ll appreciate it so they can continue to shore up the coalitions they have across the globe to make them harder to root out.
One thing is for sure; being sarcastic and pissy on the internet isn’t going to help. Better to build bridges than walls.
I never suggested violence. But there is not even remotely enough push back from people. Still shopping, still buying entertainment (sports, concerts, streaming etc). No protests. Don’t tell me the American do everything they can and it would take violence. Sure, all other countries have problems too but the USA better be quiet because no other country has a mess like that. Canada didn’t vote for PP and it shows.
The US is mostly losing to Iran due to logistics helped along by badly underestimating their enemy. Logistics are much simpler should they attack Canada.
That said, I have a hard time assessing how much drones would help here. I don’t expect they would do as well against a better supplied military than Russia has, and a lot of our bases and population centers are very close to our border, but America has shown they are also unprepared to deal with drone warfare effectively. They have also shown strong signs that their more effective leaders are either out of power or being forced to follow bad directions from their civilian leaders. After all, they are in the process of dismantling their foreign bases while waging a war halfway around the world, which only complicates the logistical challenges they already have. I expect drones are also very effective in guerilla warfare, not just the brand of asymmetrical warfare Ukraine is fighting.
I am 70 years old. I’m sure I could be a very good drone flyer. If not strap a bomb to my scooter and I will head into a crowd of them and go boom.
They wouldn’t have to. The US isn’t going to start shelling and launching cruise missiles against our infrastructure, they would send an occupying force across the boarder by road. “We’re just here to free those Albertans who are being held against their will.”
No Canadian is gonna roll over and let US troops walk down their street, there are scores of people ready to block roads or burn down a building rather than hand it over. And there are the hundreds preppers hoarding guns in their basements, ready to take a shot and then fuckoff into a crowd of people willing to hide them.
The US could take Canada but it would be such a blatant and open act of unprovoked aggression I would be willing to bet even China would put pressure on the US to top, if only to protect their assets in Canada.
One thing is for sure, it would mean the end of the US as the world’s superpower and a transition to China being the world’s trusted hegemon, for better or for worse. The division and civil unrest it would create in the US alone would be mortal self inflicted wound geopolitically.
It’s not the Canadian military they should be worried about. What they should be worried about is “In case of emergency: Grab SKS, go innawoods”.
Canada has a lot of innawoods, and a not inconsequential amount of SKS, and a lot of citizens vehemently opposed to certain orange pedophiles that they would probably find something useful to do innawoods even without an SKS.
I think most wouldn’t care. They’d complain for awhile post things online but most people won’t fight.
I agree most wouldn’t care. Most wouldn’t have to. It doesn’t take that many active insurgents to make occupation absolutely hellish and unsustainable for the invader. The Viet Cong was only about 200,000 strong at its peak out of North Vietnam’s 20 million population, they beat the US pretty brutally. Yeah they had help from the rest of the population and from external forces… (but probably so would we!)
It would be interesting if Canada took a page out of Iran’s book and find some areas in the Canadian Shield and build missle and drones cities under it. How long could Canada keep it hidden?
